I have hunted Cheatham WMA for 6 years now only during rifle season. I have passed on many does except for in 2022. I thought it was a doe (was using lever action with iron sights), and it turned out to be a small spike when I tracked him down. Outside of this one deer, I have not seen a buck the entire time I've hunted there. I have probably averaged 20 days a rifle season out there. I've hunted ridges, saddles, creek bottoms, power lines, bedding areas close to fields, bedding areas deep in the woods - morning, midday, afternoon, evening - close to main road, far as yugo from main road. I mean I've tried everything. I see tons of scrapes / rubs and my buddy who has game cameras sees activity at night, but not one of the three of us in our group has seen a buck in 6 years!!! Even driving in in pitch black morning all I've ever seen in fields / roadside are does.
I bury my hunting clothes in leaves for weeks leading up to season and play the wind. Is the population out there just that thin or are they just that difficult to hunt after the mid November rut?
