Sunday morning was good to me. I setup in a back field of the lease in a turkey chair, plan was to learn more about the area by observing, it was not my intent to shoot a deer with the rifle I was carrying. But my buddy and I had a standing agreement that if a nice deer presented a good opportunity within handgun range that it was game on. I wasn't sitting for 5 minutes when I look across the field and a decent buck is walking straight toward my corner. Then I see an even larger buck behind the first one! Both were on a string right to me. The smaller of the two got within 30 yards, and right as I located him in the scope of the handgun he scented me, blew, and ran back toward the 2nd deer behind him. The 2nd deer froze looking at me 55 yards away. He was quartering to me but I had a steady enough rest that I felt comfortable with the shot. S&W .44 mag using a 240 grain hard cast bullet going around 1,300fps. Bullet entered at front left shoulder, hit both lungs, top of liver, and exited in front of right rear leg. He ran a fair bit until his lungs filled up but fortunately he never left the field.
