Congratulations! That's an awesome accomplishment!
At 20 yards, you probably got a big, nasty exit didn't you? I shot one with .357 factory 158gr JSP once and there were puddles of blood where he ran.I have taken 2 doe with a handgun. .357 both inside 20 yards factory ammo
An antlered deer would be nice.
Congratulations
Oh yes indeed, great job and congratulationsSunday morning was good to me. I setup in a back field of the lease in a turkey chair, plan was to learn more about the area by observing, it was not my intent to shoot a deer with the rifle I was carrying. But my buddy and I had a standing agreement that if a nice deer presented a good opportunity within handgun range that it was game on. I wasn't sitting for 5 minutes when I look across the field and a decent buck is walking straight toward my corner. Then I see an even larger buck behind the first one! Both were on a string right to me. The smaller of the two got within 30 yards, and right as I located him in the scope of the handgun he scented me, blew, and ran back toward the 2nd deer behind him. The 2nd deer froze looking at me 55 yards away. He was quartering to me but I had a steady enough rest that I felt comfortable with the shot. S&W .44 mag using a 240 grain hard cast bullet going around 1,300fps. Bullet entered at front left shoulder, hit both lungs, top of liver, and exited in front of right rear leg. He ran a fair bit until his lungs filled up but fortunately he never left the field.

What handgun and cartridge do you hunt with?Congratulations on your First handgun deer, I haven't hunted with a rifle in years, all my hunting is with handguns, even small game. Actually I started hunting with them in 1979 but would switch back to a rifle occasionally, but would always migrate back to the Shortgun. I have hunted exclusively with a handgun since 2003. Took an Antelope last year in Wyoming @ 260 yds. Keep hunting with that handgun, you'll find it's way more rewarding.
