Choke for 870?

IMO I would change your choice of shot size.....
If you are open to entertain this, I'd have to agree. I'd go with 3.5" Magblends (5,6 & 7 shot) and an Indian Creek choke in .665 constriction. That is what I shot before I switched to TSS and it was a lethal combination all the way around. For that matter, 3.5" Magblends in the 870 with any reputable choke in .665 will be plenty if you do your part and hold on him. Good luck with your choice and shoot me a PM if I can be of any more help.

I'll be shooting 3.5's and i have #4 shot right now.
I'd look for a .670 constriction for that setup. I know Kick's Industries makes one because that is all I once shot and it was a very solid combination. Click on link below to see the Gobblin' Thunder chokes and their constriction recommendations based on length of shell and shot size. Good luck with your choice.

If you are shooting Longbeard 4s you will need tighter than .670. I have swithched to the longbeard 4s but that is the only shell loaded with 4s that I would consider shooting.
Kicks make an excellent choke, like Andy they are the only chokes I have used since about 1995. However I switched all my guns to JEBS last year..Their design is awesome!!

Opinions on chokes and loads are like buttholes, everybody has one and most of em stink! LOL. With that said, Im firmly planted in the 660 rhino camp. Ive set up several guns for myself and others and when asked what choke to get, a 660 rhino is always my answer. In fact, Ive even gone so far as to tell some people if they bought a rhino and it wouldn't shoot to suit them with either nitro H51013 4x5x7 or Hevi shot mag blends that I would buy the choke from them. Ive yet to have to buy a choke ;)

You would have to because Rhino sure wont take them back.... :tu:

I think any choke below .680 you should be thinking about getting a scope or good set of sights or plan on missing a lot. A bead sight is not going to cut it with that tight of choke restriction. Especially at 0 to 20 yards. You are essentially shooting a slug.

Very well said.

I shoot and 870 with carlsons longbeard choke .660. With longbeard xr 3" #5's. Death out to 50 60 yards. Not saying I would shoot one at 60 but 50 is very tempting. Had over 20 pellets in head at 50.

Rhino .660. Remington 870 3 1/2 nitros. I turned it down 4 clicks and I'm good.

I know you're not asking for input, so feel free to disregard this comment, but that pattern looks over-choked to me (dense cluster at 12:00 and dense cluster at 3:00 but thin everywhere else). I bet if you went to a .665 you would have a more uniform pattern and still have a dense core.

Nitro actually recommends a 665 now for these shells. 15 years ago when I put this gun together they recommended the 660 then so actually they have changed design of shells on me. your probably right a 665 would be more uniform but I'm too cheap to buy another choke. Lol

As popular are the Longbeard ammo has become, you'd have no trouble selling that .660. Rem270 may even be in the market. But I do also hare spending money on chokes because there is always a chance a new one wont do what you want it to.

Do the Nitro folks still push the Rhino chokes? I was young but I remember when they were just getting big and so many people were going to the Rhino .660s with nitros.

Sorry for the thread hijack btw.
