Hello everyone! I'm a 30 year old Marine Corps veteran who now works from home, and over the years I have come to miss being out in the field. I recently picked up a Savage Model 110 Apex Hunter XP bundle chambered in .308 Win, and I'm looking to get out in the woods. Ideally, I'd like to hunt whitetail, but I'm open to anything else as well. I've actually got my eye on either a .22lr or .22 air rifle for squirrels and rabbits in the near future, as I've heard that hunting them will provide great stalking experience for deer season. In addition to the stalking experience, I figure it would be a fun way to get boots on the ground and potentially gather some intel on whitetails while I'm out.
About a week ago I passed my Hunter's Education exam. I've only been hunting once as a very young child (compound bow, fell asleep against a tree trunk, type of thing). I've been trying to consume any information that I can online, watching Meateater, The Hunting Public, etc. I don't want to blow up any hunting spots, but I do have two WMAs picked out nearby. I'm not sure what their success rates would look like, but hey, at least I'm trying to get a plan together so I can hit the ground running next season!
My hope is that this forum will be a place where I may perhaps find a hunting buddy/mentor to get me started, and I hope to learn a lot from you all!
Thanks for having me in camp!
