Clear cut some timber this summer. Now what???

As long as there's enough fuel to carry a fire you can pretty much do it anytime. Might need a little regrowth so you have enough fine fuels for it to carry.

I have seen hickory sprouts from individual roots left behind the dozer however they are slow and are addressable. Sweetgum on the other hand is fast but very susceptible to herbicides.
Pine is fine but I would like to suggest adding in some mast trees and maybe a strip or 2 for annual plantings. No matter what you plant you just picked a fight with the sweet gums , kill em chemically!

That's right about gums. Why pine are you looking for a quick future harvest. If not plant some oaks. And/or some fast producing sawtooth oak or Dunstan chestnuts. White oak great tree but maybe not for your lifetime. 25 years to start producing. Best acorn production 50 to 80 years. Harvest (small trees) 60 to 70 years.
