I've been thinking about making an extractor, extractor guide and extractor sear for one of my Winchester 37's. I already have another in 16 gauge to possibly measure all the parts and draw up a print for everything. My question is, how would these parts need to be heat treated? What would be the best steel to use? Thanks

If you have an old piece from the gun check the Rockwell hardness and consult a metallurgical guide or a metallurgist. That's the way my buddy did when he made us all custom chokes for our turkey and waterfowl guns.

Yeah, duh. I didn't even think of doing a Rockwell test. I have two 16 gauge model 37's. The one I'm working on has none of the extractor parts. I was just thinking about maybe making the parts instead of buying everything.
