I always plant my popcorn and sweet corn patch in cereal rye or wheat and crimson clover. My raised beds do not lend themselves to incorporating large volumes of matter. Planted fall gardens in some but these beds were vacant so I threw in some old peas.

Just finished cleaning my summer boxes up last wknd, and put crimson clover and hairy vetch down as cover and future green manure. Have been doing for last few years. Seems to be very beneficial.

I've found that a good cover of turnip greens does well at suppressing Fall and Winter weeds. Leave a few standing in the spring and you can easily harvest 100s of seeds. This works best if you like to eat turnip greens.
