Want to preserve your wooden cutting board? There may be other ways but we've had one for several years and about once a month we coat it with olive oil and let it set overnight. The next day just wipe it clean. Ours looks as good today as it did 7 years ago.
 
Frequency of OO treatment depends upon who is cleaning the board after use.

My Wife cleans our Cutting board like the devil himself was sleeping in the pores. Sterilizes it with boiling water. She don't like germs. I do the OO treatment about every two weeks when I am home but even so it is showing its age.


I have a plastic board, it seems okay....hard on knife blades...cleans easy.....not very pretty

I had a board that appeared to be treated with something. The board would get wet and swell up and eventually it fell apart.

The tip works really well. Just keep My Wife away from your clean-up time.
 
I wonder if rubbing it down, by hand with a salt-water "paste" would satisfy the germophobes
 
Nope. I have seen my wife use Clorox. We have spray bottles with 100% clorox. no water to cut it. No germ lives on my block, they have heard the rumors about my Wife and her Clorox and stay well clear.

I have seen some really beautiful wood cutting boards. I made one of walnut and maple squares in HS shop. My Mom ruined it in maybe two weeks.

Oh well.
 
Great idea..I have a oak cutting board been using it for 10yrs, never thought of treating it with EVO after getting sterile. Needless to say its a trouper but showing age. Think I might sand it down scrub then treat ..do you guys put your wood cutting boards in the dishwasher?
 
No, never in dishwasher, never, heat and hot water, you may end up with kindling.

I use soapy water, rinse, wipe it dry, coat in OO. I used to have a little plastic iron-looking thing with a soft pad on the bottom and I would rub that all over the surface, using increasing pressure. Nowaday I just pour it on, rub it all over, let it set

All this to maintain the very cool look of wood at work. Most of the time I pull out my plastic and get cutting.
 
I like the cleaning method without the hot soapy water and hard scrubbing, now if I could just get my wife to buy in to it.
 
i never use any type of cooking oil, they can turn rancid. i use mineral oil after a good washing and drying. the lemon and salt trick poser uses is a good way to scrub stains. bleach can destroy wood fibers and make it worse, you would be better off using diluted vinegar.

end grain up boards, by nature, are pretty much antibacterial as long as you dry them good after washing. plastic boards can hold bacteria. i use 2 boards, one for meat and one for vegetables.
