Damn I love this state. First deer

Small spike
Damn proud of myself
A deer is a deer, don't care if it's a spike or a 14 pointer.
Can't boil antlers enough to make them edible.
I've known guys who have killed 10 point bucks as their first deer harvest, never to accomplish it again.
I've killed a ten point Pope and Young and a 13 point Pope and Young. They don't taste any different from a a 2 year old basket rack.
I only hunt for meat now and will try and hold out for a heavier 3.5-4.5 deer.
So far this season I've taken a mediocre racked 8 pt that field dressed 161 lbs. And today I took an 8 pt that weighed 121 lbs.
When I pull a backstrap out of the freezer, I won't know which deer it was from.
Every deer is a trophy!!!!

Spot on.
When me and my wife moved down here, our goal was to remain as self sufficient as we can.
I got my deer of a lifetime 3 years ago when I lived in Illinois and coincidentally it was my first deer.
My wife and I love venison and after paying $4.99 a lb for 80/20 ground beef, my incentive for whacking the first deer that walked by as long as it didn't have spots increased. I have 0 issue with guys whacking a fawn, it's just me.
This is my second deer ever and what made it special is I did the scouting, set my blinds, did my own tracking after the shot, field dressed and hung. All by myself.Today with a neighbors help, I will finish the entire process.
Not bad for a former southside of Chicago white trash dude.
I have learned to really love this life. The freedom of walking out my door with gun in hand and doing what I love.
Here's a picture of me and my little buddy watching a deer walk behind our house.
