Saturday Radar and I hunted my place for turkeys. Both of us had bows in hand but frankly I was wondering if I had any birds. This is my first turkey season owning the place. First set up was on the side that has big woods. I hoped they roosted right off my property and we could call them over.
Both of us I could tell was itching to get over on the select cut side. I had heard gobbling a few weeks prior off my property and a fair distance away but knew we had more room to roam over there. After a few hours we decided to pick up and head over to the new spot. On the top of the ridge as we were walking we seen turkey tracks. I have to admit I got excited.
We set up the blind and began to call, what I thought was two gobblers on the ridge off our property began to gobble. I was excited just to hear a gobbler. After several gobbles I was smiling just knowing birds were in the area. A few more calls and in the distance heard the same gobbles but this time I thought I heard one from the other direction. A few more calls, a gobble that scared the crap out of me. He was within a 100 yards heading our direction. Radar watched him come in and I could only hope he came to the decoys because he was on my blind side. Nope, he inched out of bow range and headed down the logging road.
The next hour or so was filled with calls and gobbles only to watch a bird on the next ridge over strutting and pacing back and forth. Frustrating? Not really we both had a blast bow hunting and getting a bird or two fired up. We would have two birds down if we were using shotguns but with a bow it adds a whole new dimension.
We had to leave at 10:00 to meet the guys to start on the cabin. Next year we will sit on the cabin porch the evening before next years opener and talk about this hunt. It was that fun!
