HB 1618

Where did this bill start?
In the state House, it was introduced by Rep. Kip Capley from Summertown.
Sadly it appears we have lawmakers that know nothing about wildlife management making laws that can have an effect on wildlife...
And this is a terrible idea for the wildlife. They should listen to the biologists, but they aren't. Apparently he had one or more constituents approach him about this, and they convinced him to put the bill forth. My opinion, someone stands to make money from it somehow, whether it was campaign contributions, or the person(s) that convinced him stand to make a substantial gain from it somehow.

I don't care what you do on your property but I don't like the government giving you permission and assessing a tax for their "permission". How is the bill written? Feeding wild animals needs a permit or just hunting over it? What are the specific words giving TWRA officials inspection rights on private property?

Here is the exact wording, I don't see anything in it allowing inspection rights.

It does allow for TWRA to suspend baiting to prevent the spread of disease, so I suspect this will be done in CWD counties as soon as the bill is signed into law if it passes.

Thanks. I do not have a problem with that bill as written. Of course, the House Bill and the final piece of approved legislation may look completely different.

"A person may hunt, chase, trap, kill, or take wildlife using properly shocked corn .... "

Properly shocked corn? What is that and why?
Google "what is a corn shock"

Group of corn stalks tied together
  • A corn shock is a group of corn stalks tied together. Tuesday I spent the morning helping chop down corn stalks, put 12-15 of them together in a shock and tied them up with twine.
Is this intended to void the use of loose corn? Sounds like typical bureaucratizing of words with a hidden agenda somewhere. And requiring an inspection to make sure the corn is "properly shocked.

What's going on with this? I heard it may have passed today? I do not understand how they would pass this if they do not want to "spread the disease". Or is it their continued mentality of "kill them all"

The way I understand it its not the TWRA that's wanting this done....but looks like they didn't put up much of a fight .

It has not passed yet. The house bill is on the government operations committee calendar, and is in status "Action def. in Government Operations Committee to 4/14/2025", so it was put off until the 14th(https://legiscan.com/TN/bill/HB0938/2025). The accompanying senate bill is on the senate government ways and means committee calendar scheduled to be heard on the 15th.(https://legiscan.com/TN/bill/SB0869/2025)
