Dead deer

A wounded or terrified deer can put you in a world of hurt. Had a biologist friend who walked up on a doe that had her back hooves caught up in a hog-wire fence. He cut her loose, and instead of running away she turned on him and kicked the crap out of him. Broke two of his ribs.

I made an uncharacteristically bad shot on a 3 1/2 year-old buck. Hit him in the hip as he was chasing a doe. We blood trailed him cross-country for some time. Blood trail went into a small patch of brush. I went around the brush to catch the blood trail on the other side. Buck was in the brush and came out antlers down charging me. I tried to hide behind a big oak tree, but he chased me around that tree three time. Eventually deciding discretion was the better part of valor, he tried to run away and runs past me so close I put my rifle barrel against his ribs and pull the trigger. That buck hangs on my wall as a reminder of how dangerous a wounded deer can be.
You have wilder stories than Daniel Boone 😄

Although it seems as if I hear a story like this every year. Be safe out there

Ive had that happen once. Shot an 8 pt and left my gun (MZ) turns out he wasnt dead, only broke his back. He charged me and I sidestepped him. A few yards down the hill was an old woven wire fence so the next time I approached him I "led" him into that fence. When he got tangled up in it I cut his throat.

I was hunting last year, decided I would hunt this area on the ground, hard for me to hunt on the ground, seen this big blow down,so started down to set behind that big root ball of dirt,a buck jumped up and ran so i got on down to where he jumped up thought he would run out a few yards and stop, didn't see him,he looked around that root ball, here he comes charging me,no time to raise my muzzle loader so I shot from the hip, creased his back, think the blast made him miss me,he ran about 30 yrs and laid down in a brush pile ,finally got where I could shoot him,he was a six point been shot in the shoulder, friend asked if I was scared, didn't have time to get scared happen so fast

We hunted deer with hounds in south Mississippi , friend shot one with a 7 mag and we trailed blood for hours, hounds chasing him and we never got in front of him even though we had a blood trail ,it was just total chaos. He finally went into a beaver pond, dog baying him and I went wading in looking for a dead deer… all was well until he arose ! he came up out of the water like a missile! 3 feet in front of me!! Forgot I even had a gun in my hand for a split second , finally quit backing up and shot this little bitty 5 point and stopped his escape and my panic attack. Friends bullet had hit him in the hoof so that's why we found so much blood. Should have mounted that one, has been 30 years or more but that one will be remembered , sure scared the poop out of me that day, oh and I got sick from wading in the icy water. Not sure he was worth all that but we did have fried back strap and sausage!

Deer are much stronger than anyone imagines. When they fear for their life, they can move with super strength. Everyone I've see trying to tackle a deer or hold it down end up regretting it. I've walked up on three bucks that weren't dead. I backed up and put another bullet in them and one of them took off like they were shot from a canon. I don't get near any deer that ain't eyeball touch dead.

I was small game hunting once. I was maybe 14 or 15. I'm still hunting through the woods and about 10 feet in front of me I spot a buck on the ground. I thought it was dead until it flicked an ear. I stood there for a bit, then reached down for a stick. I tossed it at the deer, hitting it in the head. That thing jumped up, put it's head down and snorted at me. I was scared it was going to charge me. It ran off in the other direction. I laugh about it now but that was something to behold.
Now that's something you will never forget.
