Decoys

If Setterman was as good as he thinks he is he'd be hunting turkeys barefooted with a handmade hickory bow wearing only feathers in his hair.
At least put a loincloth on him before you paint that picture...

What's your thoughts on the use of decoys.
1- setting up on logging roads
2- setting up in woods
3- setting up in Field edge

Also if you use what is your set up?

I would love to talk to you about using decoys since everyone else on here is opposed to them and is trying to get them outlawed. If you ever make it to northern middle tn maybe we could do a little hunting together.

I would love to. I love hunting them, but have always hunted by myself. Would love the company and learn.

This afternoon was quiet everywhere we went. I did not get any film of calling or decoys. I will say, i did not measure the spurs of my nephews bird but i would think they were awful dang close to 1.5" comparing them to a pic i have of some officially measured. Anyway, i went back to my last 2 years of hunting which included 19 kills with me and people i hunted with. One of those was in Nebraska so I did not include it my numbers, but it was not over a decoy. I know no one will probably believe this, i really didn't either from my own memory, but 50% of the kills were using decoys and 50% were not using decoys. Many of these I do not have recorded measurements because they were killed by someone else. However, the one with the longest spurs was not over a decoy. The second longest set was over a decoy. After looking through the numbers briefly I do not see any correlation to bigger (which I know does not necessarily mean dominant) turkeys killed either way.

I know I will get hammered for this but #1 in 2018 was a bearded hen. I doubled with my nephew, he shot a longbeard, no decoys used.

I figure no one really wanted to see these but someone asked, so here they are.

My nephew shot a bird today, spurs over 1.5", 10" beard, called him in from a field. He's 22 years old and has been hunting since 13. Killed his 2 biggest birds this year calling them in and has hunted less than 2 hours total. Without calls these birds would be alive to breed.
