I'm trying to get together the stuff I need to reload .223 for AR range ammo. I assume I will have to take whatever is available. Is there anything that I don't want, other than paying extra for BR or Match primers if I don't have to?
For the AR if you could get some CCI #41 primers that would be ideal. But most any SRP will work. The 41s just have a little harder cup to help prevent slam fires from what I've read.
All small rifle primers are not the same. Agree with mup, if you are loading for ar's, on getting cci41's if you can get them, magnum srp will work fine too. You don't want Remington 6 1/2, they are not for 223. Not sure about cci400 or federal standard small rifle primers. I primarily use Remington bench rest 7 1/2 and cci41, but I have stocked up on others as I could.
I've used CCI 400s, CCI 41s, Win SRPs, and CCI 450s in 223/5.56. All have worked fine. CCI 41s and 450s are very similar in potency and cup hardness, from all that I understand.
Slam firing may be a real thing, but I've never experienced one, and don't really know if I know anyone who has. That being said. I'm not nervous at all to use CCI 400s in an AR, and do so pretty regularly. Of course, I rarely just "blast away" and prefer to load and shoot for accuracy
Do not use Tulammo KVB-223 SRP primers. We have had far far too many FTF events with these primers. That would be in bolt and AR rifles. Pull the trigger click nothing. Rifle down, wait 60 seconds. Try again same result.
The possibility of squibs in the barrel or a loud click at a bad moment just isn't worth it.
