Don Higgins

Completely different topic, but Jeff Sturgis content is everywhere. I would be interested to know his youtube income alone. i get sucked into his videos all the time.

Don Higgins promotes the rope for scrapes and the first time I ever heard that podcast, I ordered some rope and some of those Smokey lures. Sturgis promotes the grapevine limb and that is what I use now. Both seem to work.

it still amazes me that I can tie a stick in a tree, scrape out the ground and place a camera there....sure enough the deer find in and take it over.

Both guys have some informative stuff they share for sure.

A hunter, consultant, and deer hunting writer who's best known for killing multiple 200"+ bucks.
Gotta be good at what he does but I'll say it again " Exclusive Property " . Others have done this . One guy on a hunting show but can't remember the title killed four 190+ deer in one season. He promotes don't forget that hunting is your God given right . I'll try and remember his name. But if you have the property that only you have access to then alot on this site could possibly do the same thing .... now I didn't say I could but some on this site could . I'd probably choke drawing down on a giant. I understand watching these shows a hunter may could gain something that could help him but I don't get caught up on their success because of the properties they get access to . Oh I remember now his name it's Mark Heck of of Your Given Right .

Yes I agree. He's in a big buck area of a big buck state, on well managed private ground, and it's not lost on me that he used to be a deer farmer. He used to pen raise giant bucks and did so on the same property he now hunts. So there's that. I'm not taking anything away from his knowledge base. The guy is smart and I seriously consider his ideas on habitat for big bucks. Some I agree with. Some I do not. But I do consider them before disagreeing.

BSK is the first person I ever read of said piss under a limb and the deer will come lol, keep yer grapevine and sticks tied on a tree, got plenty of limbs made on the tree and the pee is free ;)

Not disagreeing with you but I don't think he's killed all his big bucks off of his own farm.

You should take the time to read his book. Yes he was once a deer farmer but he did not stock his farm with his deer so that he could shoot them later. In his books, he talks about the sense of smell that wild deer have because he talks about how wild bucks would show up at his pen when his captive deer were in heat. He references that there was not a tree within a mile of his pen - but yet a buck could smell it more than a mile away.

He also references the way captive deer eat during weather events and relates that to how wild deer likewise eat - and how we should hunt them during these times.

Don Higgins is a very smart guy that has developed food plot seed tailored just for deer. He markets food plot seed and his knowledge about mature whitetail bucks is genuine in that he learns it the old fashion way.

Geez, I hope my comments aren't taken wrong, as
I have no pro or con thoughts about Mr. Higgins,
and have never seen nor heard of him before.
I presume he's the real deal, but . . . . .

I basically just quit seeking out magazine & internet hunting heroes MANY years ago when so many I once had later turned out to be dirt bags, like Noel Feather (and many other "celebrity" hunters). I know some exist, I'm just NOT SEEKING ANY. I do have some hunting "heroes" (like Grant Woods). Most those accomplished hunters I most highly respect have never sought fame nor fortune based on their presumed hunting prowess.

He markets food plot seed

I would be curious as to how "his" seed compares to say some seed "developed" by extensive scientific research, such as by Dr. Woods (who also "marketed" seed). Never mind that I'll probably just keep buying cheap seed in bulk from the County Co-Op :)

Heck, watch the videos of those 200" bucks, they are free. The one from the tree stand is some nice footage.

I am a Higgins fan. The guy knows whitetails and much of that knowledge undoubtedly comes from the farming side his experience. It gives him unique insights and understanding. I thoroughly enjoy hearing his perspectives.

However, I am not above noticing the plausible appearance of impropriety that comes from shooting an abnormal number of abnormally large free range bucks on and near a retired domestic deer farm. Whether everything is above board or not, it sure is an incredibly odd coincidence of circumstances.

I think he has killed 3. The first one …he was accused of game farm. The last two, the game warden was callled out both times.

He's first 200" was taken away by the IL dnr for some time until he was proofed innocent of any wrongdoing. He stays from then on every buck he's killed has been on video.
