I finally unpacked everything my FIL sent. It turned out to be a Rock Chucker 2, a Lee Challenger, and a Lyman turret press, 8 die sets, Lyman #55 powder measure, 2 case trimmers, a Lyman 500 beam scale and some more odds and ends. I already picked up a Lyman book, a RCBS universal hand primer and a brass tumbler. I was looking at the powder dispensers/scales and I have seen the RCBS Charge Master 1500, Lyman Gen 5 and Gen 6, Hornady Lock and Load and a PACT High Speed. What does everyone use or recommend? I have looked at online reviews and they are all different so is it a Ford vs Chevy type thing or is one really more consistent and accurate than the others?

My only experience is with the Hornady...not impressed. Inconsistent when compared to other scales. Tough to get it to dispense accurately.

Tried one years ago it failed so badly I have never re-visited the genre.

However, I have heard from some fellow hand loaders the newer RCBS models are pretty good. Specifically, it repeats a charge to within +or- .2 grains every time. So a setting of 25 grains could be in a range from 25.2 to 24.8

Just check your weights on a beam scale every 10 rounds or so until you are very comfortable with the results.

My RCBS is very accurate. It will tell you if an extra grain or two drops in. Just pour it back and recharge. It's a huge time saver versus the balance scale and trickler method. I am very happy with mine. Worth the money.

Extra grain or 1/10th grain? The hornady would almost always over dispense for me. And accuracy of the scale itself was only .2-.3 give or take. My charges can be a lot more precise with the beam. Others may be more accurate or could have been the one I was using.

Fairchaser, you mean 1/10 or 2/10 grains, correct?

I know there are lots of loaders who feel small discrepancies like these do not have any effect on accuracy. I won't argue the point, YMMV.

Looks like I will get the RCBS. Just have to keep an eye out for a good sale on them since I'm in no big hurry. I have noticed them priced from $280-$375 right now.

They have some mods to help with this. A mcdonalds straw in the tube cures most. I usually set my charge light and trickle the rest of the way.

Sorry to confuse but I meant one or two individual granules of powder not grains as in the measurement. I've never counted them but it feels like you could almost count the granuals of powder on each load and they would be the same.

I had a Pact and it worked fine. But I got rid of it because I do a lot of load development (changing powders, weights) and they are a PITA to use when used like that and having to dump the powder out every 9-12 rounds. If you load a lot of ammo with the same powder all the time they are very useful for that.........just not how I am.
