Federal TSS Ammo

I have never hunted with TSS before... I will try a box this year

They will have just enough boxes there to stir up tungsten fever. Good news- I'll be able to find 20 gauge longbeards to try this year since everyone will be chasing the new fad.

Looks like the 20 gauge #9 load will be a reduced recoil load. Not sure what to think about that.

I'll not be using that personally, but it could be a great youth load ---- better than anything else out there on the commercial market.

The review only shows the 20 gauge loads available in #7 TSS. Is #9 not available in the 20 gauge loads?

Yes they will have #9's for 20 gauge as well, there was a typo in the graphic

Nothing to worry about as long as the muzzle velocity is 1,000 fps, which is plenty deadly out to 50-55 yards. What is not to like about a very light recoil load that kills dead at that range? The 1 1/2 ounce load of #9s will have approximately 540 pellets, which is plenty enough (>500) to get the job done, and with a full choke to boot.

Word of advice, you do not need to choke it like you would HTL loads. Full choke constriction, or just a tad tighter is more than enough, with plenty of forgiveness, out to 50 yards. Good luck!

Good info

Part of me is glad that TSS will be commercially available so I will have fewer friends-of-friends asking me to make them shells. But part of me knows it will result it a lot of people who read stories and reviews about 80 yard turkeys, but who haven't really patterned the shells, trying to make a cool youtube video and shooting at field turkeys at ridiculous ranges. But I digress.

At $31.99 a box for 20ga 3, I suspect that price is going to hurt Apex and Nitro sales. Their's is $41.99 and 45.99 a box if I recall correctly.

I wonder who next to offer TSS loads. Winchester, Remington, Kent, Hevi-Shot?

I believe Federal recognized, cornered, and will dominate this market for years to come.
Federal already has a following in the far "superior than lead" market, especially in the fast growing 20 ga. market.

Don't see Remington doing anything like this at all.
Winchester HAD a good HTL load (the Win. Extended Range) which they quit producing
before thay started offering their Longbeard line.

If either Winchester or Hevi began offering a true TSS load,
it would cost them sales in their existing turkey offerings which remain popular.
Of course, I can see Federal's new TSS taking much of that away as well.
Suspect Winchester will continue just pushing their Longbeard line,
while Remington should just quit offering turkey loads.

Hard to say what Hevi might do,
but don't see Kent as a major player.

Of these majors, Federal was and is in the best position to do this profitably.
Should another major do it, might be a losing proposition for them.
Snooze you loose, and Federal was the only major to get ahead of the curve.
