First day in Kansas

RIos nor merriams aren't nearly as sharp as an old eastern gobbler. Hunting Rios actually reminds me of shooting chickens and the terrain and the fact that they move along ways was the only thing difficult about Merriams. Heck you can call and the whole flock will come unlike these jealous and over protective eastern hens....

Got ya. I want to go after the Merriam's next year in the black hills if I can get a few people together to go.
Me and my hunting partner were just talking about hunting the black hills for merriams next year.
It should be a fun time with A LOT of shooting. The photo below is some friends of a friend this past Monday (May 8th). This was the first morning they hunted, and the first time they ever hunted the Black Hills. My close turkey hunting buddy, who hunted the Blackhills a handful of times over the past decade, described his experiences there very similar to what you see in this photo; locate, walk, hunt, call, shoot, flop. Repeat. You get the picture. :)

....... and if they see a vehicle just driving down the road they will fly to the next county.
My buddy (not on TnD) who hunts KS just sent me an email with this:

"I saw a guy posted about turkeys in north central Kansas being tough. He is spot on that they run like Hell from a truck. If a truck stops at 800 yards they run to the woods. The farmers out there said everyone shoots them with rifles in the off season like crows. "

I'd probably be interested. I think we know some of the same people.

And congrats to the OP. I went to Nebraska late season a couple years ago, and found the birds were a hell of a lot tougher than what I was promised. Thought maybe it was me, but I was with some really good turkey hunters that struggled. We killed some turkeys, but had to work from them. It can change from season to season again.

Nicely done!

Put me in the "they ain't that easy crowd". I have hunted both Rios and Merriams...neither have been "easy". Even the private land Rios I hunted where tougher than expected.
All my hunts have been around the May 1-5 time frame too.
