For a coach on a warm seat

He's never had a problem getting talent. Getting anything out of the talent and winning with them has been the problem.

I thought his nickname was 3-Star Butch?

Well he has consistantly improved. But a bad year right now will warm it up.
Consistently improved? In what areas? The last two years his record has remained the same As his players gained experience. Some of the losses have been at the hands of very bad teams like vandy (twice) and sc. if anything I say he has been inconsistent. Losing to vandy and then beating the crap out of Nebraska for instance.

It is..... One of the RBs is a 4 - star on 247 and a 3 - star on Rivals. The other RB and DT are 3 - stars on 247. He still lives up to his name..... :)

The dates that they committed are listed. Hope this helps

Pretty good explanation for the Vandy/Nebraska deal. When they played Vandy, they had four of their defensive starters from the first of the year, and one of those, Sutton, was at about 60% from his injuries. At 60%, he was still a better option than what they had left after a bunch of injuries in the secondary. By Nebraska, they had healed up a little and played a lot better on the defensive side of the ball.

I continue to be amazed at the rhetoric about Vandy being such a terrible loss. Vandy was not a bad ball team last year, and the Vols, particularly after the defensive injuries, weren't a team that could name its score like a decade or two ago. You aren't going to win much in the SEC when you lose your interior defensive line. It is amazing that folks think things stay status quo in college football. IMO, the loss to SC was much worse than the one at Vandy.

If folks can't see the improvements in the Vols since Jones took over that dumpster fire, they are pretty blind or have an agenda. I'm not saying Jones is what they need to get back to a championship level, but 18-8 over the last 26 games isn't bad with what he inherited. Last year should have been the year to judge whether he could get them all of the way back. But, with the injuries the only grade he deserves is an incomplete.

The SC game was very strange. Hurd pretty much quit the team, not sure but that had an effect of the game. As far as Butch is not getting his players doing the best and winning, that is why he replaced so many coaches

Dobbs had probably his worst career game. Imagine what would have been said if Butch benched Dobbs during that game?

Yeah it came out after the fact that Dobbs had been staying up until around 2am daily most of the week working on two major projects for his engineering classes. But, you sure didn't hear him use it for an excuse. He just said it was the worst game of his career.

But, it came after a bye week. Butch should have brought the Hurd thing to a head and either kicked him off the team or got it straightened out. Hurd quitting mid-game caused them to have to play a freshman since AK was hurt that caused a big fumble late. It was a bad deal by all.

2 AM??? Most of the other players were out drinking until 3 am. That's no excuse.... J/K :D

The Hurd factor is something that we will never know how much of an impact it actually had. I agree that the cancer should have been removed earlier. I think Jones mishandled that whole situation. There was talk after the prior season that he was about to transfer bit Butch promised to change the offense. If he did make the promise then he lied because it didn't change to suit Hurd style. Crazy deal.

I heard that he wanted to play te but Butch said he wasn't tall enough. I could be wrong.

Hurd would make an awesome tight end. Could u imagine what u could do with him at tight end? Get him in open space where small cornerbacks are tasked with taking him down. U could also always run end around and trick plays just to get the ball in his hands in space. He was utilized wrong I think. He did make a helluva running back but they had Kamari for that. I've never really understood much of butch's game planning. He doesn't see talent and use it in the right way it seems,
I get the feeling many players don't care for him. Seems an awful lot of guys that should have been NFL players left the program. Idk how often it happens at other schools. I may just notice it more when in happens at ut. I really don't know why I follow ut athletics so closely seeing how I don't like them at all except for basketball. :)

Don't worry, it seems to be a common theme with many on this board......... :tu:

I'm of the same mindset of scn. Last year was supposed to be the one to grade CBJ but it ended with incomplete. I think it is funny opposing fan bases get so worked up over what he does at Tennessee.

Not worked up but more so in disbelief that they have settled with what they have for so long. I hope he is there forever. :tu:

All rival fan bases are the same... If they say they don't like seeing UF do bad or whatever, they are liars.

Why can't he be graded off his performance last year? Injuries?
Injuries didn't cause the bone headed coaching decisions he's made that have cost the vols so many games. All the injuries suggest to me that coach Lyle didn't have his players in good enough game condition, and when the second stringers that are more talented can't step up and beat lesser opponents, look at the coaches.
When they used to really be good, and always demolished vandy and almost every other team they played I didn't follow them near as closely. I guess now that they are mediocre at best and have a losing record to vandy over the last five seasons, I enjoy keeping up. Plus, every radio show and and Tv shows always focus on the vols because every year they are supposed to be back. Living in TN and being a college football fan, you can't not keep up with the vols. They are tn's team.
I don't get worked up about what coach Lyle does at tn, I'm just sort of surprised he is still the coach since he hasn't lived up to expectations. The unreal talent he's had and not being able to produce wins is just as baffling as the fans that still think he's the ticket to championships. Maybe the vols have been down so much in recent history that they are settling for mediocrity. Butchs best records at UT got fulmer fired and butch has done less with more talented plyers imo. No doubt he has improved the situation Dooley left him in tho.
I love these threads. :poke:
