Why can't he be graded off his performance last year? Injuries?
Injuries didn't cause the bone headed coaching decisions he's made that have cost the vols so many games. All the injuries suggest to me that coach Lyle didn't have his players in good enough game condition, and when the second stringers that are more talented can't step up and beat lesser opponents, look at the coaches.
When they used to really be good, and always demolished vandy and almost every other team they played I didn't follow them near as closely. I guess now that they are mediocre at best and have a losing record to vandy over the last five seasons, I enjoy keeping up. Plus, every radio show and and Tv shows always focus on the vols because every year they are supposed to be back. Living in TN and being a college football fan, you can't not keep up with the vols. They are tn's team.
I don't get worked up about what coach Lyle does at tn, I'm just sort of surprised he is still the coach since he hasn't lived up to expectations. The unreal talent he's had and not being able to produce wins is just as baffling as the fans that still think he's the ticket to championships. Maybe the vols have been down so much in recent history that they are settling for mediocrity. Butchs best records at UT got fulm

Just for curiosity sake, who do you think Tennessee should hire? I personally would not trade him for any other sec coach.

I really don't know why I follow ut athletics so closely seeing how I don't like them at all except for basketball. :)

Don't worry, it seems to be a common theme with many on this board......... :tu:

I'm of the same mindset of scn. Last year was supposed to be the one to grade CBJ but it ended with incomplete. I think it is funny opposing fan bases get so worked up over what he does at Tennessee.
Butchs best records at UT got fulmer fired and butch has done less with more talented plyers imo. No doubt he has improved the situation Dooley left him in tho.
I love these threads. :poke:

Actually, Fulmer's last 4 years and Jones' first 4 are very similar.
Fulmer was 29-21 and 1-1 in bowl games.
Jones is 30-21 with 3 bowl wins.
The difference is that the program was in a decline with Fulmer. His last 4 years were preceded by back to back 1st place eastern division champions. And 3 out of the previous 4.
Jones is having to build up from the disaster that was Dooley.
Even though Fulmer inherited a lot better situation than Jones, Fulmer still didn't win the east until his 6th year.
And I don't know if it's necessarily true that Jones has had more talent. Fulmer's last 4 recruiting classes of '04-'07 ranked 11th, 2nd, 23rd and 5th.

No it doesn't. Bcse I know I'll take 11 straight for one loss and start a new streak this year. :tu:

And yes I want hi. There forever! What is he 1-3 against UF??? Lol

Injuries wasn't a factor all year and they played the same all year. App st should have won. Ohio played them close till 4 minutes left... want me to keep going? Most injuries was on defense. That wasn't the Avila strength going in. It was suppose to be offense. Injuries can't bail him out of how bad it was ALL YEAR

The vols started 5-0, and boat raced VT and the Gators in the second halves. It wasn't a bad start until the injuries mounted up. It is sort of ludicrous to think that ANY SEC team, with the possible exception of Bama, would win after losing all of their starting interior defensive line, both starting linebackers, starting corner that was drafted, and their pre-season AA kick returner. That is a lot to overcome. With what they had to start the season, I think UT would have had a great chance at beating anybody on their schedule with the exception of Bama. When you lose 14 starters for extended periods, you aren't going to be on the same level.

And, when all of that happens and you are playing what was ranked by the NCAA as the #1 toughest schedule in all of college football, it probably isn't going to be pretty.

It is..... One of the RBs is a 4 - star on 247 and a 3 - star on Rivals. The other RB and DT are 3 - stars on 247. He still lives up to his name..... :)

The dates that they committed are listed. Hope this helps

Rivals ranking are mostly comprised of their camps they run. You can be the best player at you position in the nation nearly and if you don't attend their personal camps and a few of the other camps you will never rate high on heir site. I'm a rivals member and their rankings are just meh. I consider theirs but also take into about 247 (the best I think) and espns. Just something to consider before you start touting rival rankings either way

I think all my rankings were pointed towards 247 and just used Rivals as a secondary ranking for one of the RB. The OP pointed out that all three players that committed this past weekend were 4 stars and that isn't the case on 247. One. Is a 4 star and the other two are 3 - star. Hope this clears it up because I even posted 247's link.

ESPN is last on my list with Scout. Normally 247 and Rivals are pretty close and the other two are all over the place. Just my 2 cents.

Can't disagree with them being all over the place but my point was that if they don't camp at certain camps their rankings aren't as high but that has no bearing on their ability. Take Cade Mays for example. He's ranked pretty high but would probably be a 5 star if he went to more of the camps and showcases but he's a legacy and firmly committed so he chooses not to do many of them. It hurts his ranking potentially and more than likely in reality.

Too many true facts too argue your response. :tu:

My main thing is TN started out against App st playing like garbage and it continued the entire season. I know the injuries piled up but they was healthy the first game.

TN did not have a good game against Appy. IMO, they kept the offense way too basic trying to run it down their throat and not show anything for later opponents. It almost bit them. But, again, Appy State was not a bad team last year. At least TN came away with the win against them unlike Michigan.

But, to go 8-4 while losing 18 of their 22 first game starters, and most of those injuries for extended periods, against what the NCAA rated as the toughest schedule in the country doesn't equal a terrible coaching job by the TN staff. And, when they got a few of those starters healthy again, they beat a decent opponent in the bowl game (who was dealing with significant injuries themselves by that point).

I, personally, didn't learn much about Butch's coaching ability last year due to the injuries. I suspect it will become clear in the next year (or two if the Vols don't totally crap the bed this year).
