For those who have harvested mature bucks with a bow

Never seen a second rut. Once the first week of December is over in Middle Tennessee, just seeing a deer can become tough much less a mature buck.

I've lived here 6yrs and haven't yet not seen a second rut. We're in January & the season is over, and bucks are still hounding does.

This broken rack buck on left was chasing does. Right before he arrived there were a bunch of does trotting through. It's only a still image but you can see his demeanor.

The stud in the right side pic was also chasing. Behind him was a smaller buck who was also trailing. Same as first pic, they were following a group of does. Neither buck in the pics have been residents on the property this season. They both showed up for a few days, chased does, then left again. This type of activity happens first & second week of November, then again the week of new year & week after. I've seen sporadic chasing all the way up into March. My favorite thing about it is that the second rut is generally a completely different batch of bucks, so it's almost like hunting season starting over. Been this way since I've lived here. Manchester, Coffee Co., about 30 miles south of Murfreesboro.

I've not had great success with a ladder over using a climber. Feel safer with a ladder. a couple of my set ups have include using a lock on under a regular 24-28' aluminum extension ladder. I strap the ladder to the tree at the top. I paint the ladders this time of year, after the season and in the early fall zip tie brush & twigs to the side rails. Leave the ladders year round if you can but take the lock on's down after the season. Still think a climber is more stealthy but more work for sure.

Lock-ons and ladder stands work fine just don't over hunt them and always hunt when the wind is right for that stand.

IMO the stand doesn't matter. Location that puts you within bow range and not over hunting the area is way more important. That includes checking cameras…I won't even check a non-cell camera unless I am hunting that particular stand during season. I prefer lock-ons though
