Getting Ready...

Thank you. Have you ever pick up a gun and feel confident? I know it sounds weird but I love how this gun feels. It has everything I want. Muzzle break drop mag. cheek adjustment and limb saver recoil pad very light weight. Perfect for an old guy.

Absolutely. The day I picked up my A-bolt II in 7mm-08. That thing is a tack-driving killer.

Although I'm not exactly getting ready for hunting season, I AM getting ready for "management season" - the time of year when I do most of the habitat work on the property. And the worst part about that is the monetary costs. Thankfully, after our last timber harvest, we got the bright idea of placing the money from the timber sale in an interest-bearing investment account. Now, all of our habitat work is paid for. However, my 94-year-old NON-hunting father still controls the purse-strings to that account. The way it works is I put everything I do on my business credit card and then my father reimburses me from the account. However, investing and making money is what he really enjoys, and at times I think he seriously questions what I spend money on! So I'm in the process of writing a report detailing the full management history of our property - what we have done and why - including charts and graphs. I'm trying to explain to a non-hunter why we "do the things we do" from a scientific perspective. It will also help to explain to my hunting partners the management decisions I've made and why I ask them to collect such laborious levels of data.

Only problem is, what I originally thought would be 4 or 5 pages is now at 30 and still climbing!

You have confirmed my decision on my farm. With the storm Helena and all the down trees I've allow a timber company to come and get the trees for X amount per yard. My plan is to keep this money in a hunting account to allow for hunting and property management. That deer feed alone is pricey. But it allows good habitat as well. I can go behind the timber co. With the tractor and clean up behind them. I hope. Next year I plan to put in a small food plot with clover and not sure what else. About 2 acres. I will not hunt over it just to help my deer. Camera's 4 sure for inventory and pleasure. I'll be asking questions again.

Season never really ends for me. I'm year round doing something deer hunting related. Most of the time while I'm sitting on stand I am mentally planning the off season, and I get to work pretty much as soon as I'm done hunting. The slowest part of the year for me in terms of deer hunting is the month before archery opener. Other than killing a few squirrels for the skillet I try letting the woods relax a bit without me. Otherwise deer hunting is on my mind 365 days of the year.

I keep notes while hunting. On things that need to be done.

BSK made me think to start keeping a journal. This started last week when I went to the farm. I think it will pay off with cell phone pictures to help me remember.
I keep a hunting journal to. I didn't do as good of a job on it this year. But I have for several years. This year drove me crazy with how the deer acted compared to past years.
