Giving up the 12g gonna use a 20. Eyesight as I get older is headed downhill. Want to put a scope on shotgun. What are you all using? pros and cons?

Thanks

I had always shot a regular bead until this year. I put a Burris Fastfire III red dot on my 20 gauge and really, really liked it.

I think any good red dot type scope or site would be good. The really cheap BSA are no count in my opinion.

I recommend a red dot too. If you don't like the red dot style, then a scope with a circle plex reticle 1.75-4 power is what I use and like too.

Highly recommend a reflex-style sight. I've been shooting a Vortex Venom the past 2 seasons. Shot a Fastfire III for 3 seasons but during that time I had two of them go bad. Thats when I switched to the Venom.

I was in your shoes last season ,never used any type of a scope on a shotgun. I wanted to try something on one of my 20gauge turkey guns to see if I would like it and if my 10 year old could use it also. I put a tasco red Dot on the gun. I ended up killing two with it myself. The thing worked like a charm and with today's tight patterns it definitely helps. I was not going all in expensive until I seen if I liked a red dot. That tasco worked so well I probably will not change it. There are several good options available in various price ranges.

Second the reflex sights. Hate you had a bad experiences with the Burris. I've got a FFII and a FFIII and never had an issue. I know of a ton of people who use them and seldom heard a bad word, so maybe your experience was a fluke. They have great warranty/customer service (as does Vortex). I wouldn't hesitate to get either. They both can be mounted with a very low profile base wich is optimal.

BTW, I think every year around Feb/March Burris runs a rebate. Two years ago a bought an AR scope and got a FFIII free by mail in rebate. Sold the AR scope on ebay and came out with a free Fastfire.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Will check out the options listed here so far.

To add to this as this is the route I'll be headed down thru the winter, what mounts are the best. I have 2 20s. One youth and one standard. Neither is drilled and tapped.

Check out Sumtoy Mount for fast fire or vortex venom.

Yep. Burris makes a mount for the Marlin 336 that works well with just about any shotgun receiver. That's what I have on both of mine. That has been a really popular option for a long time. Sumtoy's design is similar but designed more specifically for a shotgun. Sumtoy now also makes one with a one-piece mount and protective guard.

The gun needs to be drilled and tapped (not difficult or expensive). These mounts get the sight as low as possibe to the gun so you can still get good cheek placemet when shooting.

I have my FF3 mounted with the Burris Marlin 336 mount on my 870 20 gauge. I had it drilled and tapped at a local gunsmith shop.

I use a Leupold NWTF Edition 2-7 x 33 with turkey plex reticle. The higher magnification isn't necessary but can come in handy. Put his head in the circle and he's dead. No batteries to die either.
