For the last 10 years I have always heard and seen turkeys on opening day, and throughout the first half of the season. At dawn they would start gobbling from one end of the valley to the other. It started with 4 distinct roosts on the farm, but has steadily declined.
Last year was just one roosting area. But they were there, as usual.
This morning, nothing. No gobbles, hens, sign, nothing. Even the trail cam I put out in their flydown area showed no birds. Neighbor's fields that ALWAYS hold birds were bare.
They seem to have steadily moved north off the property and now even the neighbors property. (Saw tons of deer, though.)
There has been no change in habitat or field maintenance.
Maybe just too cold today? Got me worried.
