Doing all the scouting and hard work doesn't entitle you to any spot on public.

True, but getting there first absolutely should.
it should but it's public, so you can't go in expecting that...you can only hope, and know a couple backup spots to move to if you get screwed.

I'll stick to my primary spot. 420 acres I lease and I control. No googans get a key to the gate.

Hey the more people like you the better the hunting for us public land rats. The hardcore turkey hunters are the ones I have to worry about when the googans have all gone home.

Thanks for making my point for me! :tu:
When I lock that gate behind me, I don't want to have to worry about anything. I might have to worry about work, am I saving enough for retirement, my health, my kids, etc. etc. etc., but I don't hunt and fish to worry.

I don't mean "worry" the way you do. It's the same as "worrying" that a bird might hang up. Just something that can happen in the woods. No reason to quit hunting over it and I still enjoy the time chasing turkeys any day that I can go.

Who the helll said anything about quitting??? I will never quit hunting. But I don't HAVE to hunt public land. I can afford to lease land to hunt. Fighting googans for a spot on public land isn't the only way to hunt. As crazyeye's story shows, this guy was a douche and had no trouble crowding people already in a spot. It's even possible he knew nothing about LBL so he rode around looking for a truck to park next to.

Well you pretty much quit public land as soon as someone messes you up. Which is fine and completely understandable. You got a good place to yourself. But if you had to only hunt public, and I remember you saying this in the past, you would quit turkey hunting.

That part is true. I would fish all year. Public land hunting just isn't fun for me. Thankfully it's not either or for me.

All I have is public land in WTN. It gets so damn crowded here that I have been driving to Mif TN and hunting. I have been getting up every morning I have been off at 2am and driving for birds. I have run into people in Mid TN just like West. But the thing is, the ones in Middle TN have all left once they have seen my truck. Its kinda an unwritten rule where we are. If somone beats younthere, go to a diff part of the WMA. Even had a guy the other day beat me to a spot and he left when he saw me pull up. Even tho he beat me. He had been hunting everyday out of the bottom and I had been in the bottom. He saw me pull up and go to turn around and flagged me down. Told me he wasnt fixen to impose on birds I had been hunting all wk. Man was prolly early 30s. Nice man. We exchanged numbers and have been helping each other ever since...

Good stuff there! That's how it should be but people just have no common courtesy anymore.

a lot of guys will turn around at my truck too, it's just a few selfish people that don't give a crap. Most guys I actually run into I am happy to share the woods with. I've never got mad at anyone but I think those Arkansas guys probably could tell I wasn't happy with them. At least he said he was sorry lol.

I went to lbl prolly 20 years ago. It was awesome. Lots of birds and beautiful country. Killed by 8 am. Went back about 5 years later. Left after the first 3 hours. I told my buddy I had way better spots at home. Haven't been back. Back to the Googans early the first morning I guy pulled in on us. We said where u going? I said hmm that's where we are going. U better walk fast. After about 3 or 400 yards he gave it to up. Couldn't keep up lol

Most don't have the mindset, attitude, patience and raw skill to consistently call to the gun and kill turkeys on public ground, so they blame their lack of success on the googan factor. Glad to see more and more quit it each year. On a positive note, their further "education" of the turkey population on these public grounds with their tactics all but guarantee there will always be Gobblers left to hunt ;)
