Was on the lake practicing for a tournament this morning. About 11, a turkey went to gobbling, and I gave chase. He didn't gobble much, but I could hear him spitting and drumming at about 80 yds. He wouldn't budge, and I needed to be fishing. So I made an aggressive 20 yard move. I could still hear him spitting and drumming. Finally he gobbled a few times, and came strolling in very cautious. Had to take a 40 yard shot, and the longbeards hammered him.

19.75 lbs
10.75" beard
1" spurs

That's the good news....

Bad news, when I jumped up, my ankle turned, and I broke my fibula bone in my leg above the ankle. Waiting on surgery now.

Yikes, sorry to hear about your injury that really sucks. Congrats on the bird though. I hurt my knee several years ago on my way to a downed bird and thought my season was over, I pressed through the pain. If I lived closer I'd try and get you out which is possible on the right piece of ground.

Dang man I hope your ankle heals quickly. That had to be great striking one up while fishing and killing him. I want to try that "cast and blast" this year if I can manage a day off work soon.

Dang man sorry to hear that about your leg. I broke the tibia and fibula playing football in the 8th grade. Snapped like a toothpick just like Joe Theisman's and same year but mine didn't come thru the skin. Congrats on the turkey though. Hope you can still fish.

Thank guys! Surgery went well. Still in some pain but in good spirits. I guess that my limit will be two this year. :)

The thing that hurts me the most is my 7 year old son is chomping st the bit to kill a turkey. He was up to bat this weekend and next. Oh well.......

Wow. Were you still able to get out yourself or did you have to call for help?

I had to call for help. I luckily had a cousin who was down there fishing close by. I nearly panicked after I realized that I was hurt bad but told myself that I had to calm down. My wife wanted me to just forget about the turkey, but I couldn't do that. My cousin carried the turkey and my gun while I crawled probably 250 yds to the boat. I had him to snap a pic while taking a break. I did lose my favorite hat in the ordeal and not sure where my mouth call, face mask, and gloves ended up, hopefully in my vest. He loaded my boat for me and got me in my truck. I could drive since it was my left foot. I might could have made it alone, but I owe him one. My Dad took me to the doctor. My Mom wasn't happy that I had to debreast the turkey before going and weigh, measure it. :) All of the docs and nurses have got a kick out of my story. :) One said that turkey is in turkey heaven saying I got him. :)

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers! I had to stay at hospital last night. I get to go home this afternoon. I am doing good and in good spirits. It still hurts, but they've got me on some good meds.

Not to make light of your ordeal, but I about cracked up thinking of you crawling with all of your gear and a turkey somehow strapped to your back :) !

Hope you heal soon, and glad that your cousin was nearby.
