Would it be worth bringing a spinning rod to fish from the beach. Looking for a straggler redfish or flounder maybe?

When?

Right now they are killing big trout on topwater and suspending jerkbaits wading in off the beach. Giant schools of big reds (200 fish) are also patrolling the beaches and feeding on pogies.

In another month, most of the trout will move into the bayous.

Oh, flounder is great right now off the beach with paddletails on bottom. Won't be long before they all move offshore to spawn tho

The key to finding them off the beach is to look for the gullies that are 1 to 1.5ft deeper than surrounding flats

Check Google maps, zoom in to the surf, and you will see what I am talking about

Had two very inexperienced young nephews with me so I spent most of my time keeping them untangled. Fished around Gulfport Harbor they were using small pieces of fresh shrimp on a brim hook and a split shot. Caught fish pretty much every cast. Pinfish, croakers and a few small trout. I ate my weight in raw oysters was the best vacation I've ever had. That area of the coast is extremely overlooked.
