Heading to mississippi

Got drawn for the early season non resident public land hunt in Mississippi starting next weekend and have no idea what to expect. Has anyone here ever partaken in it? I imagine the opening weekend will be extremely overrun with hunters. Still going to give it a shot though

I would imagine with the new "draw" system for public lands it should have LESS hunters (NR) then years past which would be a good thing for you. I cant speak to the public side though in MS as Ive never hunted it.

Im headed down March 27-29th to hunt there as well but on private land.

Opening day is on a Saturday this year, be prepared for everyone to be out. I hunt public in Mississippi every year, birds are still in big winter flocks can make hunting hard but still worth going out. Some people have more respect than others and will leave if a truck is parked where they want to be some not so much. Last year opening day I had a guy come in right on top of me and bumped the birds I was on. Weather leading up to opening day should have them gobbling good on the roost but considering them being in big flocks don't gobble much on the ground.

Nailed it. The warm weather around the opener should have them gobbling a bit better than normal.

Been hammering most calm, crisp mornings in deep south MS.

As far as the crowds, hit the public after noon, yes it WILL be crowded in areas that have a handful of birds.

Spent 3 hours this morn coyote hunting and scouting for turkeys down here. THICK FOG! had 1 dog howl back at me, but I never saw him if he came in.

But didn't hear a peep from any toms on the limb this morn. But terrible gobbling weather. Very few songbirds were singing.
