This thread made me get off my butt and save some seeds. Cherokee Purples, Beefsteaks, and some big ole yellow tomatoes that have been in the family for generations now. The yellows have been saved so long now it takes 2 tomatoes to get enough seeds to cover half a paper towel! EVERYTHING Ive planted for the last few years has all been heirloom stock. I wish I could plant some of these green beans, butter beans, etc.... that my Mom got from her Mom who got them from her Mom, x who knows how many generations, but I cant. If I did the deer would get them before I could get my seed stock back so they lay dormant in the freezer until I can find somebody without deer or a high enough fence to keep them out to raise them.

Speaking of heirloom seeds, I planted what I thought was canteloupes my Mom had saved, she died in 1996 and they have been in the freezer ever since. I planted probably 12 cups of them, used up the seed stock, only ONE made it but its certainly NOT a canteloupe! I dont know what this thing is but Im going to let the biggest one mature and start to rot before I cut into it to see. That way I can at least get her seed stock back and HOPEFULLY figure out what it is!

Here's the "whatever the heck it is" Huntaholic is talking about. Anybody have any ideas? My only guess was a loofa gourd. My grandma did like gourds for whatever reason. But I honestly have no idea.

Mush melon!
My grand father grew those. Have not seen any in a long time.
Very cantaloupe like but longer season, much larger.
Well worth the effort to continue them.
They are delicious. High in sugar and bruise easily so not successful in the markets but a great melon

How big will it get? I dont want to wait too long but I dont want to pick too soon either!

I have seen them as big as 16 inches long and 10 inches wide.
Cool! This one aint gonna be far from that! I need to pick it and let the resources go to a couple others that are growing but not near as big but I dont want to pick it too soon!

Could you possible spare a seed or two? I'd love to give them a try. I generally save seeds too.
