Hevi shot #7

I checked everywhere in and around Franklin (Richard's, Academy). Bass Pro in Nashville (waste of time b/c their ammo selection is terrible). Gander Mtn in Bowling Green, KY.

No luck.

Just an FYI, you may want to think twice about getting those shells.

Seems something has changed in those shells and the numbers in patterns are not coming close to matching last years numbers.

Check out the threads on OldGobbler.com for more info.

Are you sure they changed them or are you and others just speculating? The reason I ask is I called Environ-METAL yesterday in Oregon and spoke with their customer rep guy. He seemed very knowledgeable and he said he had run this question by the top guy at the manufacturing plant. He told me nothing has been changed in the last 3 years in the manufacturing prcoess of any of their shells. With that said, he did say he had numerous guys calling and inquiring about the 7s because last year they could get 250 pellets in a 10" cirlcle at a certain distance but this year they can only get 200 in that same circle. He said he understood the concern on the customer's part and he welcomed all concerned customers to contact them and discuss their issue. He was very easy to talk to. Just passing this information along.

Based on discussions on Old Gobbler (among some really big-time pattern testers and competitive shotgunners), it does appear something has changed with these HV-13 shells from 2010 to 2011.

Among those who do serious testing on a continuous basis, they are uniformly stating the 2011 "lot" of these shells pattern very differently than the 2010 lot.

This thread is quite convincing to me that something isn't "right" with the 2011 "lot" of these shells:

Some of the OG guys that called EM also got the answer "nothing has changed" too. Then one guy that called got the answer the powder changed.... something changed and the proof is in the pattern.

I believe the ones that have cut open shells have found a different wad used in this years shells compared to last years.

Hey, it's the same shell!
All we did was change the powder and wads!
Why do you folks keep calling and emailing and complaining?!?!
Same shell this year as last year!

A change in any component CAN be a significant change. If you don't believe this, try going from one brand of primer to another on your handloaded rifle cartridges (changing absolutely nothing else), and see how it changes your 100-yd groups.

Personally, all my H13's are left over from last year, and I was just in processs purchasing some more for more pattern testing. Think I'll just forego any more pattern testing on these, and use what I have to kill turkeys. My hope is Winchester might soon come out with their Extended Range line in a #7 shot, or even better, Federal might begin offering their #7's WITHOUT that "Flight Control" wad. Otherwise, I'll be handloading my turkey shells next year as the only way to consistently get what I want and know what I have.

For those who haven't switched from lead to HTL, but were about to make the switch, I'd now suggest your first trying the Winchester Extended Range shells over the "Hevi" or H13 brands. And, unless you have the time, money, and inclination to do extensive pattern testing, you'll probably have your new "go-to" turkey load with the Winchesters.

The proof is in the pudding. If they cut them open and compared them (I saw the pics of the two different wads on OG) then I will have to say I believe my eyes over what any customer rep tells me. Thanks for the link Wes. Headed out to my garage to check my lot numbers now on my Magum Blends. I really did not want to target shoot any more turkey loads this year and take the beating I took last year.

Patterns alone do not tell me anything "definitive" about a shell from last year versus a shell from this year. The gentleman on OG that took the time to open up a shell from last year versus this year and photograph the different wads tells me something definitive. I have had shells from the same box shoot 15% different if you solely count the pellets (250 versus 210), thus the reason I asked my original question.
