How about this?????????

That literally makes me dizzy because it so unethical and absurd. I hope he's lying, if not he needs to stick to deer hunting

Appalling that the guy has so little regard for wounding a bird.
Taking an extremely low-probability shot, his only thought was
he could afford to waste a shell on the "Hail Mary" shot.

Unfortunately, my opinion, most of the comments on that thread thought similarly.

Best I remember, on a distant running away bird,
we're about 7x more likely to put a pellet in the gut (mortal wound, days later)
than a pellet to the back of the bird's head (instant kill).
Based on that formula, seven birds die for every one "bagged".
So what, right? We can afford to waste a few shells.

I have a hard time believing that distance.

That makes 2 of us. Need the scientific guys to chime in and tell us if the shot would even penetrate at that range.

Maybe he is a poor judge of distance. I personally witnessed a guy kill a gobbler at 90 yards. It can be done. He had estimated the bird to be 55 yards, he is a very ethical hunter but a horrible judge of distance.

Everybody misjudges distance but if you don't understand what almost 100 yards is you should get a range finder and USE IT. I'm a pretty good estimator but still carry one and use it when I first sit down to mark some mental markers.

Im not proud of it ... but I did the same thing ,same distance many years ago. I dont tell the story because its unbelievable,, my buddy who witness whole thing does not tell it much either... It was with a 3 inch shell... In a field , when I shot buddy comes up and says what the bleep you shooting at??? He was amazed And couldnt beleve what happen. I was thinking 60 steps when I shot. And we where long stepping to try and make us believe what had just happened. Since then I try my best to judge and range as soon as I sit down on bird, I start picking markers and such.

haha my favorite is "I always shoot mine 30yds and in" which is a lie if you have to lead with that.

on a different note maybe he has baby legs and 94steps = 40yds hahah

I dont buy that one bit to be honest. If you cant tell the difference in 90yds vs 50yds then you have no real business out in the woods IMO. I can get you thought it was 40 and it was actually 50 but a difference of 40yds is a WIDE margin.

Agreed. I've misjudged from 40 to mid 50s, but 90 yds and you can't even pick out the head on a turkey

worst I've ever done is mistake 45 yds for 60-65 yds, both in open fields. One shot 3.5 mag blend dead turkey at 62 big steps (i'm 6'2"). I had one laugh at me with a 3" mag blend (different gun) and fly away (no his feet were not hanging down).

I now have a range finder and try to make a conscious effort to range land marks so I know if he is inside of that he is inside my range.

You can't believe it because you are thinking like yourself and basing it on you, everyone isn't you. That may be hard for you to understand though.

Btw I witnessed it first hand so I really don't care if you believe it or not, don't like being called a liar

I wouldn't call anyone who makes it a habit of shooting AT birds at 55 yards, much less 90, an ethical turkey hunter.

What makes him the most ethical hunter you know?

First, I didn't say anything about him "making a habit" of shooting at turkeys 55 yds away

Second, with today's guns, ammo, and chokes 55 yds is not such a long shot as it used to be
