What is considered to be a fast bow? What is an average bow speed? With everyone claiming to shoot 300 plus I think I'm way behind at 284-289fps. Also to get the max IBO how light is your arrow/broadhead, how does this affect penetration?

It's just a number . I would be excited to be getting your speed . I'm shooting 265 ish . I have a 26" draw . I don't care about speed as much as KE and good shooting . After all if your bow shoots fast you can just miss faster .

Thanks 163, I like my mission. The fastest bow i've ever owned I think? I never much thought about it until the past few years before that I never really cared. Guess im caught up in the latest greatest..etc..etc..etc

My Hoyt Spyder Turbo shoots a 380 grain arrow 296 fps at 65 lbs with 28.5" draw length. Draw length is a major factor to what speeds people are able to obtain. A person with a 30" draw will be able to get 300 + fps no problem. Someone with a 27" draw will need a speed bow and light arrows to get 300 fps.

284-289 fps is great speed. I care more about the bow's tune and the quality of arrows vs speed.

Compared to what I shot when I first started shooting 28 years ago, every bow made in the last 20 years is a fast bow....LOL. Seriously though, don't get all caught up in speedit just means you miss faster. The average of today's bow will be an IBO speed of somewhere around 320ish if I had to guess. To get your IBO speed out of your bow, you would never want to hunt with the arrow you would have to use to get that number. Your speed is just finemany would kill to have that. What you should try to achieve is the proper arrow that is matched perfect to what you wantgood k/e, an acceptable trajectory and lastly speed. All IBO speed is, is a marketing tool used by the manufacturers to generate sales and hype for their product.

Mathews Mission 7.25 inch brace height
57 lbs
27 inch draw
300 grain arrow
304 fps

102 -

That is impressive...

I have a Bowtech Invasion - 7" brace height, 27" draw @ 60 lbs and am getting 272 fps of course if I weighed my arrows correctly I am using a 385 grain arrow.

Of course I agree with Hoss - The deer don't care!

Which Mission bow is this? That seems a little fast for a 27" draw Mission. Could be the 300 grain arrow giving you that speed.

Yes, the majority of ASA classes have a speed limit of 280. Is that your hunting setup 102?

...and yes, UTG, that 300gr arrow is where he is getting that speedonly place he can get it.

ABSOLUTELY UT. And how very estute of you.

I do not think I would EVER hunt with an arrow that light. I am adding at least 70 grains to this for hunting season. In fact, I already dialed in my Maxima 250's and 100 grain Stingers.

My pin gap is so close with the light arrows that the fibre optics bleed from pin to pin.
And talk about noise and hand shock. WHAT A DIFFERENCE with the noisy light arrows.

Funny thing, for some reason I have always shot BETTER with a bow shooting in the 260-270 fps range. Faster bows in my hands tend to be less accurate for hunting, and targets.

I literally tried out the light arrows as an experiment.

Really do not like them.

My goal is to be in the 270-290 range with my hunting set up. My current Elite Answer is getting about 285-289 with 360grain arrows and a 29.5 draw.

i will prob switch to heavier arrows when i need to replace these but i have 10 left so it will be a while lol

With my PSE Revenge I'm shooting 67lbs DW, 28.5 DL, with a 422 grain Arrow and I'm getting about 301-302 on the chrono. It's a 340 IBO...how they get that number is 70 pound draw weight, 30" DL, and a 350 grain arrow. I don't care about speed as much as I do KE. I like my arrows to weight between 400 & 450 grains total weight.

I shoot a BowTech Invasion CPX with 380+ grain Easton Flatline arrow(that is total weight of broadhead, Lumenoks and all). My hunting setup pushes high 327-330 FPS on the chrono(with a 29" draw). It carries 98 Ft lbs of KE. Everyone on here that is talking KE are right on the money. Your bow has to have that driving force more than the speed. Most importantly you need shot placement, as noted on previous posts if you miss it doesn't matter how fast it goes.

How fast is fast ? How slow is slow ? How accurate is accurate ? How light is too light ? How heavy is too heavy ? How much is too much ?
Anymore questions ? :)
