How much KE do you need?

turn it down a bit, 65 lbs will pass through at 20 yards if it doesn't hit shoulder/leg bone, possibly pass through at longer distances too. I shoot low 60s because it is comfortable and sure does get the job done.

I am shooting only 59 lbs. A 409 gr arrow at 279 fps and 71 ft/lbs is plenty. I was fortunate enough to kill a bear this spring and at 18 yds the arrow entered the left chest and got both lungs and exited outright chest and then proceeded to go through right leg busting the femur and stuck in the dirt behind him. But of course I was using a Muzzy head.

I have killed a whole bunch of big bodied deer with 50 pounds KE.

Being able to "thread the needle" and put that arrow right where you want it is paramount.

I have also NOT shot through hard bone at over 70 pounds of KE.

This season, and last, I will shoot a 400 grain finished arrow with a COC head (Stinger) at about 50 lbs KE to hunt.

This past January, while nursing an injury, I hunted with 47 pounds of draw weight and a 350 grain arrow to kill 2 large does.

No problems.

I MIGHT have been shooting 240 fps.

I had to buy a 60lb. Max bow last year because of my reoccurring shoulder injury . Sure makes a difference shooting and holding at full draw from the stand , and I can practice shooting several dozen arrows on the range without getting fatigued. Shot two deer last season with pass throughs , so I'm not lacking in KE ether .

I shoot 500 grains at 278 fps. It almost is enough I think.

a friend of mine is shooting 600 grains at 265 out of a hoyt. He needs more I think. I have weighed the arrows and seen the chronograph. He is only pulling about 70 lbs. Shoots as well as anyone I have ever seen. He places in tournaments all the time (I believe he has to shoot a different setup in tournaments, I don't know I don't shoot tournaments) but he can for sure shoot, with his target bow and his hunting bow.

ft lbs and ke is hilarious, it doesn't take much at all!!! watched a young man drill a good buck pulling 29lbs with a 21 in draw arrow was buried up to the fletchings, stinger hanging out the other side!!! 50 yards later dead deer!!! the older you get the more macho hurts lol shot placement is king!!!!!
