How was your acorn crop this year?

Sawtooth, carpeted the ground as usual. White (Swamp Chestnut) very light. Then all the tiny varieties dropped fairly heavy. Had a lot of persimmons. Odd thing was some trees dropped most of their fruit first part of October and some others are still hanging on to their fruit even now.

Plenty of chestnut early, white oaks best in 3 yrs but still spotty on place & haven't seen a single red oak yet. Wayne Co.

There are two genetic strains of wild persimmon, one that drops early (late September and early October), and the other that drops over the entire fall, holding some fruit into December. I sure would like to have a bunch of the later! Persimmons dropping over a long period of time can be a real hotspot in poor acorn years.

I have one near 100 years old on our farm that holds it's fruit about all winter.

It was there when my granddad was a boy. Said a lot of possums were ate from that tree

We had one mature tree that held fruit into mid-December. It was a true "killing tree" for many years. Most drop early, but if you can find one that holds late, it's a magnet in poor acorn years.

My place in S. Lincoln Co. sucked. Hardly anything from red, white, willow, chestnut or chinq. Nor hardly any walnuts, pecans or hickory nuts. Was weird. Did have some persimmons though. Good thing I planted some greens this year.

Thanks for that info. I have never heard that.
