I tell hunters all the time that they can never be scent free. No matter what you do, deer directly in your scent stream are going to smell you. However, one of the factors involved in how they react is the intensity of the scent. And deer judge "distance" to danger by the intensity of the scent. Strong human scent, danger close, run now! Weak scent, be very cautious. I'm no longer as anal about scent control as I used to be (because I've gotten lazy), but what I've noticed since I started working on scent control is how rarely deer bolt when they smell me. They lock up, and then very slowly move forward, looking for the threat, or they slink off. But snort and bolt? Haven't had that happen in years.
