I confess

Spotted a gobbler that was walking a powerline toward me. I side stepped into the woods, waited about 10 minutes and flat ambushed him at 20 yards as he walked by, clueless. Never even used a call.

I spotted a few turkeys in a small clearing. Had a little bit of a rise between myself and the birds.

Dropped my vest and belly crawled to within 25-30 yards (no fan needed) (no reaping) (no calls)

Still a very enjoyable hunt

If you sneak up on a turkey and kill him , you have done something not easy. If you sound like a turkey, trick him, and call him in, get kill shot without being seen, you have really did something not easy. I have hunted with the best, and talked to the best , None have been above plan b. or c. or whatever it takes.

I e had to finish one off with a rock all while he was flogging the crap out of me as I held onto his fan while laying on the ground after I dove to grab him before he hit the field. Thought I had more shells but only ended up having 1 in my gun. I have tons of them from when I first started going on my own

??. And then what happened?

my fav i confess i have was the first year i started going alone.

I rolled out to the middle of a fairly large field just after day light (first mistake) and stood in the wide open (2nd mistake) and went to town on a box call (3rd mistake). before i could even finish my calling i had one HAMMER just on the other side of the wood line. well i was so shocked that i didn't really know what to do so i froze (4th mistake), the bird comes running out of the woods right to me as i stand there like an idiot and just stops and sees me and turns back and runs back to the woods.....SOOOOOO what do it do? I duck into a brush pile that was about 20yds from me and set up and start calling FULLY thinking i could call him back (5th and biggest mistake). oh and i stayed there for about 40mins waiting hahahahah (Stupid mistake)

Scratching my head over that one, but I would have liked to seen it. You middle TN boys sure do have some odd methods :D !

I have ambushed birds before I learned the "proper" way to turkey hunt.

With that said, one of the absolute most satisfying hunts I had was early in my turkey hunting career. My dad had got permission to hunt some property 2 hours away, so we only made the trek on weekends.

Anyway, I could not do anything with him, as he would just stay in the same spot and gobble, and then hush. This was before I knew better and should have just waited him out.

Anyway, the last weekend of the hunt, I devised a plan. Sure enough, he was in his same tree at daylight. I used the greenup and eased toward him. An hour later I am on the same fenceline as his tree and can even see him occasionally hopping around the branches. My little devil had about talked me into trying to get a shot.

As my little angel was still offering an argument, he pitched down right toward, and hit the ground 10 steps from me. I think his eyes were as big as mine as he realized I was there, but I shot before giving him a chance to do anything else.

At the shot, the hen that he had been waiting on, flushed from the other side of him. I had never seen her. He wasn't coming down from that tree until he had eyes on a hen.

My first year here I got drawn for a hunt at Oak Ridge. On the second morning I got set up on a bird that was gobbling down in a creek bottom. After a short calling sequence and a few minutes I could hear them coming, sure enough a head pokes up over a little rise. Then went away. I said to myself the next time his head pops up its on, head pops up and boom I shot. Turkey vanishes in a cloud of dirt and leaves. I jump up run over and no bird to be found anywhere, however standing 20 yards away is a longbeard looking at me. I assumed I missed and torched him. Went and picked him up and as I was admiring him I hear a faint leaf rustle down the hill and look to see my first bird jammed up against a log. Out of sight from where I first looked for him.

I knew I was in trouble, but carried both of them out and explained what happened at the check station. The officer thanked me for my honesty but still wrote me a citation. I earned it and learned a lesson as well.

Saddleman, your turn.
