Nothing wrong with the trial and error approach. I assure you we all screw up plenty each year, I hope a I never get to a point where I don't learn stuff each hunt or season. That's what makes ths stuff so much fun, just when you think you have it mastered a harsh reminder occurs that shows you that maybe you know nothing.

To your original question, I'm not a decoy person but have friends that use them a lot and they prefer a jake anytime after the second week of the season
