Well, yesterday was pretty uneventful for us. We heard a few birds on the roost early but when they hit the ground they shut up and we never heard another gobble. We worked around the farm and eventually called it quits at lunch. We spent the rest of the day fishing (caught some pretty nice bass) and watching basketball at the cabin. The Kentucky game kept us up a little late, so we stayed up, played some poker and slept in this morning.
After lunch we headed out and covered some ground rotating between calls without hearing a single bird. About 3:30, we stopped in the hardwoods just before a little bend and I hit the slate. Two gobblers cut us off and we sat down. They started coming straight to us, gobbling the entire way. They got to an old fence about 70 yards away and hung up, going back and forth up and down the fence. As they started to leave, I hit the slate again and they both gobbled, turned back and came through the fence. They closed the distance and when they got to a clearing at about 30 yards, Tyler pulled the trigger on his 20 gauge and the lead gobbler hit the ground. He was so excited and I was pretty pumped myself. It was an awesome hunt and a great way to start off the season!
