But I can figure out TWRAs 5 year turkey management strategy. On their website.

Create a well written proposal that appears to be biologically sound without actually saying anything. More of 'we need to keep studying the decline'.

Is this supposed to appease those of us witnessing the decimation of the most majestic game animal in TN?

Re: I may not be a smart man...

I was excited to see what was gonna be done till I read it lol. 5 more years of nothing it seems I'm to the point I'm just not gonna worry about it anymore. If we have a hunt able population I will and if we don't I won't

Re: I may not be a smart man...

I think it's time for all those responsible, concerned citizens to just stop hunting turkeys. That will help the population cone back AND make a point to the TWRA that we do care.

"A Strategic Plan for the Continued Management of Wild Turkeys in Tennessee"

Is this to imply that they have been managing them prior to now???

Pretty much mirrors my thoughts. I had given up hope for proper management years ago, and am now apathetic. That being said, I'm still fairly cynical.

I do find it somewhat funny that after all the attention hunters brought to the TWRA via our wildlife commissioners regarding the decline in Turkey populations, TWRA responds with a formal Turkey management strategy which really does nothing. Must have been written by a politician. They are usually the only ones who can talk for an hour without actually saying anything

This is why I won't let people hunt turkeys on my property. It's not much in the big picture, but it's something I can do.

Re: I may not be a smart man...

It was a preemptive for what's coming...Lower bag limits..

I thought it was pretty well done. The TWRA turkey efforts have been a success but we got spoiled quick. Now folks and TWRA are waking up to the fact that some management will be needed and good turkey populations around here won't be automatic anymore...

I've seen some things happen on WMAs that are a real head scratcher....

Re: I may not be a smart man...

Population Goal: Manage wild turkey populations at sustainable levels, taking into account stakeholder values and expectations

STRATEGY 1.1 ESTIMATE ANNUAL HARVEST
AND HUNTER PARTICIPATION AND EFFORT TO
MONITOR POPULATION TRENDS

STRATEGY 1.2 COLLECT SUPPLEMENTARY
HARVEST DATA TO FURTHER INFORM MANAGEMENT
DECISIONS

STRATEGY 1.3 ANNUALLY ESTIMATE
POPULATION PRODUCTIVITY TO MONITOR
RECRUITMENT AND POPULATION STABILITY

STRATEGY 1.4 DETERMINE THE OPTIMAL
SPATIAL SCALE TO MANAGE WILD TURKEY
POPULATION LEVELS IN TENNESSEE

STRATEGY 2.1 DETERMINE STAKEHOLDER
PREFERENCES FOR POPULATION TRENDS AND
HUNTER PREFERENCES REGARDING VARIOUS
MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

STRATEGY 2.2 INVESTIGATE DEVELOPMENT
OF AN ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR
SETTING DECISION THRESHOLDS AND SELECTING
BETWEEN MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES

STRATEGY 2.3 ESTIMATE SPATIAL AND
TEMPORAL VARIATION IN NESTING PHENOLOGY
AND ADJUST SEASON DATES OR OTHER HARVEST
REGULATIONS ACCORDINGLY TO MITIGATE EFFECTS
OF HUNTING SEASONS ON LONG-TERM
POPULATION WELL-BEING

STRATEGY 2.4 DEVELOP A DRAFT AGENCY
POLICY ON FUTURE WILD TURKEY RESTORATION
(I.E. RESTOCKING) EFFORTS

STRATEGY 2.5 REVIEW AND AS NECESSARY
PROPOSE REVISIONS TO AGENCY POLICIES AND
SOPS FOR GUIDING, ASSISTING, EDUCATING AND
PERMITTING FARMERS, LAND OWNERS AND OTHER
STAKEHOLDERS EXPERIENCING UNDESIREABLE
IMPACTS FROM WILD TURKEYS

STRATEGY 3.1 REVIEW AND, AS NECESSARY,
PROPOSE UPDATES TO THE SOP FOR HANDLING
REPORTS OF SICK WILD TURKES AND FOR DISEASE
TESTING

The other two objectives are Habitat Goals and Communication Goals.

I agree with the before-mentioned comments others have said - that is, their goal seems to be around monitoring, reviewing, estimating and collecting........while I agree research is important, that does nothing for declining populations for years. I would like to see their strategic goals now - i.e. reduce the limit of toms, delay the season opening 2 weeks, etc....

Re: I may not be a smart man...

I didn't even read it. It's twra they've got no clue how to manage any of our fish/wildlife

Maybe you should write out what you would have the twra do?

Search my posts from the past 10 years. I'm cynical now and done with TWRA turkey management. My fingers are tired.
