I get a ton of videos like this when I first put a camera in a new spot. The ability of deer to spot "something new" never ceases to amaze me.
I feel like they smell the inner components. Solder, oil from manufacturing, the scent of the assemblers. That's all protected in there and some of it never goes away.

I also think it's just their natural ability to see anything new and out of place. I have deer coming into the set-up from a great distance, and because I'm using video, I can see them suddenly "lock on" to the camera and slooooowly approach. They usually spend some time sniffing and visually inspecting the camera. Then, once the camera does nothing threatening, they ignore it from then on.

I think it's funny getting pics like that. The spike in my photo actually rubbed on the camera and turned it about 6" on the tree. I went and fixed it the next morning and he had opened the front of it

Yep, they definitely smell the cameras. Even with using gloves to hang and check them, they will still pick up on them.

Even stinkin yotes know when to look at the camera before doing something stupid. Look behind him….

I often get pictures of deer with their nose pressed right up to the front of the camera. One time I had a day's worth of pictures that were all blurry after that happened.. I believe she must have licked the lens.
