place has been crazy quiet this spring

lets say the TWRA updated the regs to say you could only have 1 turkey call in your possession for the season. That call has to be the only call you use all season unless it gets destroyed somehow. what would you choose.

for me its a very tough choice as I use a bunch of mouth calls in a season but If I had to choose one It would be David Halloran TKO mouth call.

any standard size 3 reed mouth call, I'm not picky, and the turkeys aren't either. Batwing, ghost, split V, don't care. I find those easiest to blow to make all the sounds from Jake yelping all the way to Kee-Kee runs. Over the years I used to go through a dozen mouth calls a season, changing them up even while working on the same bird. I've since learned that a bird that will answer my mouth call will answer any tone mouth call. It's what you say with the mouth call that counts. So now, I buy any quality mouth call on sale at the end of last season to use the following year. This year, I'm using a Woodhaven Red Wasp or Scorpion, not sure which one it is... white tape with red reed, split V cut. Got it for $3.50 on sale at Midway in June of last year.

That being said, there are definitely a handful of birds I've encountered I've not been able to strike with a mouth call, but I could get to instantly respond to a very high frequency pot. So I also carry either an aluminum pot or a glass pot with aluminum soundboard. Not really sure if it's the high frequency that triggers them or the increased volume.

I have called in a lot of birds with my Primos Aluma-slate. I learned how to use a slate call with my dads aluma-slate and then found one cheap in a pawn store and bought my own. Second choice would be any 3 reed split V diaphragm. Found a sale on H.S. strutt Split V-III last year and bought 10. So that would be my first and second choice if I only had 1 call.

I have a copper over zebra wood pot that a wounded veteran made for me several years ago for guiding him on a hunt. I don't know what it is about this little call that drives birds crazy (I'm assuming the frequency) but it will flat out make them scream. It's the only one of its kind he has ever built and has earned a permanent place in my vest.

Tough call. It would have to be a 3-reed reverse combo cut mouth call.

Second would be one of my pot calls. That would be an even harder decision to decide which combo...

Tom Teasers "Butt Naked Hen"

I hate the name and feel stupid every time I type it. But I love the call. I can get really loud with cuts and yelps so I strike a lot of turkeys with it prospecting. But I can make it soft when I need to. I usually switch to a 3 reed ghost cut when I'm working a turkey as I can get a better range of soft vocalizations. But if I had to pick just one, I'd take the naked hen.

I wish I was a better mouth caller. I'd go with my Jimmy Shaffer call with the zebra wood striker. That thing has proven itself.

Knight & Hale Ole Yeller

Then I would pray it never rained.

I hear that - I have an old wooden box call from Knight and Hale. Harold Knight signed it and tuned it for me as a kid in 1997. His writing on the call has faded a lot over the years (moisture). It is the best sounding box call I've ever heard. I still carry it to this day. It would be my second choice behind the Jimmy Shaffer call, just because I can cut and purr better with it.

I don't have a favorite mouth call as I get new ones each year and I'm not that picky, but if only one cal it would be a mouth call.

Billy Whites Hustlin Hen box call. It's just pure turkey. I'd feel like I was huntin naked without that call.

I was Listening to the THP podcast the other day and Ted and Warb tried to blow or suck or whatever you do with that call and I was Cracking up..."this is all Catman uses...total fail lol" I've never tried one myself and I'm sure I would sound like a busted duck on it too
