I came up yesterday to try my hand in Illinois on public land. I drew a 4th season South Zone permit that started today over the Winter and have been looking forward to it having never been hunting in Illinois. This morning I climbed deep up in the hills in the dark and waited on daylight. Just that easy I heard 2 groups of longbeards. I got on one and stayed with it for 2 hours or so but couldn't get it to come onto the public land and couldn't really maneuver on it due to the boundaries. Meanwhile, the other group I heard got shot into/at 3 times.

So, I struck on up the ridge and very quickly got on another on the other side of the ridge. He was free gobbling a lot which allowed me to get perfect position on him. Once I called with a mouth call, he just shut up on me for awhile. So I pulled out a Gooserbat High Standard Crystal, and he fired right back multiple times and was at 30 yards in just a few minutes. Very enjoyable hunt and I'm very blessed to have had some great trips this year. No more trips are scheduled so just a few more hunts around home for me before it's done. I hate I had to pack camp up after just 1 morning of hunting but I guess it is what is. 9 3/4 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.

Congrats on a great hunt and story. How do you get the tail feathers to do that?
My hand is holding them open. Turkey is wet is why it looks rough.

Congrats. Had some buddies draw there as well and each kill a Gobbler. They went on to Missouri and killed one more out of Mark Twain. They said Illinois public ground was slap full of Googs :) Good job
