Virginia allows rifles and pistols for turkey hunting.

According to the Virginia wildlife folks in 2023 only 7% of turkey hunters reported using a rifle in the spring.

I thought it would be much higher.

The only two turkeys I have ever taken in Virginia with a rifle (one in the spring and one in the fall), were both less than 30 yards. I felt like I had taken the sport out of it even tho I had called them that close.

have never understood why this is even a legal thing for turkey, feel the same way about the legality of shooting one out of a tree. Just makes no sense to me at all as far as "fair chase"
