Is it time?

I have been turkey hunting for 4 years now with only 3 birds (2 toms, 1 jake) under my belt.

So yes...I will bust a jake's chops all day long if given the chance and as long as it is legal. That said, if I ever become one of the many on this board who limits every year in the first 4 days of the season, my conscious would tell me to leave jakes to be.

if you really like turkey hunting, you don't want to limit out in the first week. Too much open season that you can't hunt. Unless you know a lot of people you can call for.

After killing a good handful of turkeys, most people tend to lay off the jakes and hunt for long beards only. Didn't take long to happen to me, only a couple seasons really. but I think it's important that you never look down on jake killing. There are always people who will be the happiest hunter in the woods with a jake, and it's not always the kids. Different people have different goals, and as long as it's not hurting the flock, then have at it. Good luck this year, and don't he ashamed to post up a jake if you kill one

Can I play, too?

If prime turkey season and prime deer season were open at the same time I'd be deer hunting. That's kind of strange because I really like turkey hunting better. I do 99% of my deer hunting out of a stand. I do 99% of my turkey hunting running and gunning....and the weather is usually pretty comfortable. Sit in one spot for several hours and hope a deer comes by or sit, move, shift, and interact with active birds? No contest. I love to play with the birds. I like to shoot them but that's actually secondary to just hunting and outsmarting them. It's been my experience that if you can get into birds, the jakes are the easiest to call in and kill. I'm really surprised at some of the dumb moves they make. For that reason I quit shooting them years ago. They're fun but really no contest. The older birds that have played the game before can be a different story. They are the chess masters of the woods. Move. Counter move. Counter move again. When things go my way I feel like I've accomplished something when I sling one over my shoulder.
