First fishing trip on Lake Tahoe. We had a good morning and caught a lot of Lake Trout. No monsters but some good solid fish. We were in water 1400-1500 feet deep in places. Most of our fishing was around 110-120 feet. Huge, deep lake.

We went 5 years ago during December and caught mackinaw there. They are like a cross between a trout and a salmon, and have orange meat. Took some to a lakeside restaurant that the boat captain recommended and had one of the best meals of our lives. That is one gorgeous place! The snow hadn't started falling when we went, so all the skiers weren't coming in yet and most places were pretty empty - it was great!

It was fairly busy when we were there. Lots of traffic on the main roads and lots of road work going on everywhere we went. Apparently the record snowfalls also caused some record pot holes. It is a beautiful place. I got tired on Florida and we tried Lake Tahoe a few years ago and have gone back 3 of the last 4 years.

We were lucky when we were there. No smoke or smog in the area. There was a brush fire outside Reno that we saw when our plane was landing. Reno was smokey but Tahoe was down wind that week so it was nice. Every night on the local news they were reporting brush fires in various areas of Nevada.

Imagine nothing but dry sage brush and grasses for hundreds of miles and that is what you have around Carson City, Virginia City and Reno. Dry conditions and careless camp fires or even hot brakes can set off a brush fire. Lake Tahoe is lot wetter and lush so it is less susceptible to fires.

On the California side of the Sierra Nevada's it is similar terrain, hotter and less moisture. I was in Arnold California (Calaveras Big Tree State Park in the Sierra Foot Hills) at noon and it was 67 degrees. Drove down to San Andreas California (31 miles) and it was 104 at 1:PM. The country side was nothing but dry looking grasses and scrub brush. Drove back up on 88 (Kit Carson pass) and it dropped down to 49 degrees by 3:PM.

Now that is the best kind of beach, now to convince my wife !

We found that we can fly to Reno, rent a car and drive to lake Tahoe, stay in the South Lake Tahoe Casino Hotels cheaper than we go to Florida and stay the same amount of time in Condos.

The secret is booking everything in January for a June or July Visit. Literally saves around $1500 just booking early.
