Late Drop Hybrid Chestnut

Dunstan chestnuts. Check them out. Produce in 5-8 years. Drop later and grow fast. I currently have a little over 900 in the fridge for stratification. I'm hoping to get half to take and grow a few more.

Thanks @Bucket Having fruit, nuts and acorns that drop early, normal time and late is a great idea to provide for wildlife. For the small orchard/foodplotter type that might just work out. Curious as to what is the name of that variety. From what I've read and talking to Chestnut Hill I would not do it in my case because other varieties might water down my Dunstans and produce less. With near 300 trees I will eventually have more nuts than the wildlife can eat so maybe in the future sell nuts or sell you pick nuts.

What Dunstans are they. Original Dunstans from Chestnut Hill ( where Dunstans originated) produce in 3-5 years and drop mid September to October. That is when they drop so I don't consider them early or late droppers. I have over 500 nuts in stratification now. Last fall sold 325 seedlings in a week.

I meant later as in up into opening weekend here in Va for the youth hunt. And i stand corrected. It's 3-5 years. Got it and a sawtooth mixed up.

I didn't see that it was a linked thread. I didn't mean to derail the topic.

You didn't derail anything. I didn't know it was liked either???

On another note, how are you liking the sawtooth oaks?

Yep. Click on "late dropping hybrid chestnut". It will take you to a page. They have some pretty interesting trees. But they are very proud of them to say the least.

So far they have done well. I initially planted 5 about 5 years ago. They are anywhere from 10-15 foot tall and starting to really thicken up around the trunks. Still haven't produced yet tho. Then I planted 10 more in different areas of my property to see how well they would grow in different soil and light conditions. I've got 5 on a clayish hill and 5 more about 100 yards away on a steep bank in my field that I want to let grow back so one of these days my son doesn't have to worry about keeping it mowed/bushhogged. This area doesn't get full sun and while they are growing, not near as fast. They are 3 years old.
Seems to me I've had the best luck planting them in 6+ hours of sunlight areas that drains well.
I have 135 sawtooth acorns in the fridge stratifying and 920 dunstan chestnuts as well.
I'll be happy if I can get 60-70% success rate out of these. I plan to plant several and then hopefully sell some as well.

The dunstan chestnuts all came from 4 trees that I planted as 20 inch seedlings. It's fun. A lot of work. But addicting. Shoot me a pm if your interested in some.

It's all good. I might have derailed it too. You mentioned sawtooth oaks. Even though I've known about sawtooths, I just bought my first trees this year. Research says produce at like six years old. The guy I bought them from said they produce at 3 to 5 year olds. Well I bought 23, twelve to thirteen foot tall that he said were three years old. They had a few acorns in the pots that were from those trees. Looking forward to see how those trees make out. Good luck on your sawtooths and chestnuts.

Edit: I missed the link at first. Thanks for heads up. Been to that Whitetail Hill Chestnuts website before. Yeah they are proud of their trees.

Obviously you are a lot more educated on growing trees than I am. I've learned a lot from your post. I appreciate everything that you've taken the time to explain.

I've always only grown a few at a time. This year will be my first large batch. Looking forward to it. I'll start a new thread once I get them in pots and going.

Well thank you. I've been into trees my whole adult life. Like you said enjoyable and addictive. Looking forward to your new thread. If I miss it please mention my name so I get an alert. Thanks and good luck.

Located in Carroll County:

I planted 400 Sawtooth oak seedlings in 2009. Over half died as I was able to take care of them the first few years (military). The surviving trees began producing in 2018. They drop acorns in late September.
I planted 600 Nutall oak seedlings in 2009. 2/3 of these trees died for the same reason as above. The surviving trees are beautiful, but no acorn production yet.
I started 54 Dunstan Chestnuts trees from seed in 2013. 30 trees survived and began producing in 2018. They drop chestnuts in October.
I add 18 - 20 new Chestnut trees each year from the original Dunstan Chestnut trees.

Would love to have a Chestnut tree variety that drops during November.

All good wildlife trees fast growing early producing. Did you just plant seedlings and let nature do the rest. I always protect from deer and rabbits. I use grow tubes and weed mats. Too many trees to water and too far to haul water. The mats and tubes I use condense and help water and keeps moisture in the ground. Mats block weeds and grass so no competition for young new seedlings. Fertilize also. November drop chestnut would be great. Don't know of any.
