Late Drop Hybrid Chestnut

I planted 6 persimmons and 6 chestnut trees from the linked site and 1/2 of them didn't make it. I used similar tubes that they sale, but not theirs, and they still honored. I have a refund for 6 trees to buy, and I'll order those for next fall

Just an FYI
Thanks, that's good to know. I may try 3 each of their late persimmon and chestnut.

My first and second go with Dunstans were quite the learning curve. First ones didn't have tubes and I swear the bucks like rubbing chestnuts more than cedar or beech. They got destroyed. Second ones got tubes but I put them up on a south facing slope inside the woods where larger trees had fallen to create an opening. They didn't live a year. My forester said even that was too much shade, so I planted the next ones in wide open sun and they're great.

Apparently Dunstans won't tolerate shade even though the American chestnut is a big forest tree. I've found them to be more finicky to shade than any fruit tree I've ever planted.

More good to know info. I was looking at planting on an edge, will have to reevaluate my plan.

If it's the northern edge of a plot or field where it's open to the southerly sun then I think it would be fine. I've got a few like that and they are doing great. Even though they're in the edge they get direct sun from 2hrs after daylight to 2hrs before sunset, so pretty close to full day.

Here was one of the other nurseries that had late chestnut trees, their reviews seem kind of mixed though. https://morsenursery.com/products/december-drop-american-hybrid-chestnut
