Some places just ain't meant to have turkeys, or turkey hunters for that matter. ;) Seems like you'll be ok though. An hour ain't bad to have to drive to turkey hunt. Hunting those pressured Gobblers will make you a better turkey hunter anyway. That way, when all the "pets" have been killed out, you will still be able to kill turkeys. :)

Never had any reason to dislike you. If I remember correctly, you've spent a lot of your turkey hunting life killing public land osceolas, which is probably the hardest of all the turkeys to kill, so hats off. But what the hell would justify you attacking people personally and their abilities as hunters for simply posting factual information about a precipitous drop in turkey numbers where there were tons of turkeys? I just cant follow your logic.

That's my train of thought, I just simply do not understand his point.

No Turkey's here at all period, but when they were, they sure as hell weren't pets. I find it easier to kill Turkey's on public land than the Turkey's we used to have, and I don't pour out no damn corn. It don't bother me one bit to hunt public land, but I so wish we had birds close to home again.

Not sure what brought on the smart ass attitude toward me for posting a graph

I actually respect you for choosing to hunt public ground. If they were as wary as you said they were, I'm sure there are still "a few" around ;) Like i said earlier, stick with the public ground Gobblers, they will surely hone your skills. Besides, no self respecting turkey hunter would kill "his own" turkeys anyways :)

I can vouch for the lower numbers in the far northeast part of the state on public. I don't know the reason. Didn't even see them riding by certain farms that I would see em on 9 out of 10 times cause they don't get hunted. All I know is heard 1 bird in 22 days of hunting /listening in 3 different counties. It's been 15+ years since I've heard multiple birds from one spot but always have able to locate a few every year before the season except this one. Seems the downward trend started 5 years ago and has got worse every year.

My neighbor owns a little over 300 acres behind me that I can hunt but don't. I could literally fill my tags every year by walking off the back porch. Neither of us have even seen or heard a turkey since last summer and it doesn't get hunted.

I've been planning my out of state trips for next year recently and found an article online ( maybe outdoor life) that gave the 2018 turkey forecast for every state and each one had a little statement from that states biologist about the population and recommended areas. Dang near every biologist stated a decline in population. Maybe a half dozen said to be stable and a handful were on an increase.

Seems to be most of the states had a lot more birds in the 80s thru till about early 2000 and now most have a decline. I don't see weather being the culprit for the whole country. Populations ebb and flow but we've been ebbing a long time. I long for the days when I could hear 10+ from one spot. Be happy with 2 tho [emoji1]

Nope haven't seen a bird nor sign of a bird here in 2 yrs, there were 7 male birds wintering on the neighboring property last fall 3 longbeards and 4 jakes or something to that nature. 1 they know got killed in February, 3 of them got killed over bait about a mile away opening week this year, and 3 of them have simply vanished. The u.t. guy has driven for miles trying to locate a signal off of the tracking collars with no luck. So 100% of those birds are gone in 1 yrs time. There may be 1 a year that would be huntable, but to try to kill a bird where there aren't any would be pure ignorance. If we had alot of birds, you dang right I'd hunt them, but we will never see huntable numbers again.

Just read and move on & take stupid comments as a grain of salt. He's just trying to stir the pot. He doesn't have the knowledge/sense to bring any real validity to this topic.[/quote]
yep u cant fix stupid. sounds like jealously to me. maybe if he owned any land that had turkeys he'd understand

I'd say if they had transmitters and went off the grid, they were poached. So, that means 6 were poached including the ones killed over bait. I can see a big part of the problem.

That's what I figure happen to the ones that went off the grid.

 Now that's funny. Peace out :super:

Wow, that's scary all 7 males were killed by the end of season. Any idea of the timeframe when the 3 that disappeared went off the radar? Beginning of season, end of season? If they disappeared early, that does not bode well for fertilized nests unless there's several other males roaming around (which it does not sound like there are in your neck of the woods).

I saw my first set of poults down here in south MS this past weekend on camera. They were a week old in the pic, which means the hen didn't start setting until around April 24th. Nest initiation around April 10th... Way later than what is traditionally thought considering our mid March opening season date.
