Layering with merino wool

When layering with merino I've found it's best not to compress it anymore than you have to. Makes it less effective. Ex. Don't put on merino and then something like an Under Armour compression shirt over the top. I like merino, then lightweight hoodie, then a jacket that matches the weather. Usually hump in with the jacket attached to my pack. Pop it on when in stand. I also like the lightweight hoodies from FL and Sitka. Both will let you unzip for the hike in.

Here's my cold weather set up.

Pants. First life furnace base layer, then first lite wool wader pants. Then outer pant is whatever matches the weather. Or first lite bibs

Top. First lite furnace base layer, then first lite furnace hoodie. Then as a jacket Cabelas Wooltimate.

Most of the time here I wear merino, second layer is Sitka Celsius midi top, midi equinox pant, outer layer. It does a good job. I have a ton of Sitka stuff and only wear half of it. Tbh if you wanted to save some cool look at Midway usas elk river parka I believe thats the name. Definitely good warmth for the cost. I use the Midway Hunter Creek bibs n jacket here a ton because they are wind and waterproof.
